iTunes Editors’ Notes

Plot line: four teenagers from Chicago find a copy of famed Nuggets compilation and discover great, unknown garage bands from the ‘60s, then end up in a creepy old house out in the woods. OK, only the first part of that scenario is true. The next part should actually read, “... and from that moment forward, their own take on punk rock was redefined.” Smith Westerns do a stellar job of infusing an exuberant, modern punk sensibility with vintage psych-rock mojo. This full-length debut sputters to life on the Wavves-ish “Dreams,” with reverb not quite heavy enough to drown out the sparkling xylophone notes or Cullen Omori’s boyish vocals. The song pretty much sets the tone: we get fuzz-drenched party rock (“Gimme Some Time,” “My Heart”), narco-laced, early Stones-inspired hootenannies (“Boys Are Fine,” “Tonight”), and a couple shots of swaggering, T-Rex sexiness (“Be My Girl,” “Diamond Boys”). Don’t let the deep-into-the-red recording levels discourage you: those pop melodies are evident on first listen, and shine through the murk a little more with each listen.

Customer Reviews

Just Fantasmic

They are great and have a mellow sound that gets you moving! I love them! (:

Drivel

I heard a sample of this as the "something for the road" on the delightful podcast The Dinner Party Download. I thought for a moment they were kidding. This is drivel. Tedious, predictable and poorly played.

New Adventures in Lo-Fi

I don't understand why indie bands still get off on making crappy sounding records. You may think you're a hipster, but you made 30 minutes of noise that would make even Bob Pollard wince.

Chicago's the Smith Westerns are a band looking for some teenage kicks with their home-brewed mixture of garage, glam, and punk, and they come by their youthful energy honestly — none of the group members were old enough to buy a beer when they released their first album. The Smith Westerns were formed in 2007 by Max Kakacek and Cullen Omori, who at the time were students at Chicago's Northside College Preparatory School; the two had been turned on to '60s garage rock through compilations like...
