Customer Reviews

Compelling, powerful, hypnotic soul

I'm compelled to write a review mostly because it's shameful to let two reviewers set a 3-and-a-half-star bar for some of the most fantastic instrumental soul music ever to come out of Memphis. While best known for "Green Onions," Booker T. Jones, Al Jackson, "Duck" Dunn, and Steve "Colonel" Cropper were the backbone of the studio sound for Stax-Volt Records during the 60's. Booker T. and the MGs almost single-handedly crafted the "Memphis Sound" behind hits by Carla and Rufus Thomas, Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, and others. While the Rhino collection is more completist, this is a fine introduction to the Atlantic years and is highly recommended for any music lover.

But in addition to their formidable...
