iTunes Editors’ Notes

How a scrappy lo-fi band matures often isn’t pretty. However, Cloud Nothings are handling the development subtly, giving little attention to the inevitable tightening of experiences. The anarchy of the group's early music is still lurking, and John Congleton’s dark production here leaves enough grit and hiss to ensure that Cloud Nothings never sound lost in a higher-priced recording studio. Guitar distortion is still job one—and it leads the way on the extended workout “Pattern Walks,” where drummer Jayson Gerycz also earns his keep, shifting the band’s gears without losing the muscular power of the sound. Leader Dylan Baldi sounds a tad subdued in comparison to earlier albums, but it’s mostly to ensure that the harmonies kick in with perfection. The band’s roots in The Replacements help keep them rough and ragged. (They’ve heard what happens when a beloved band tries to clean up.) Therefore, songs like “Quieter Today,” “Just See Fear,” “No Thoughts,” and “I’m Not Part of Me” resonate with plenty of dirty guitars supporting the sublime melodies.

Customer Reviews

Cloud Nothings have matured immensely.

This album is such a change for them overall. You can really tell how much they've all matured in their music and how better Dylan's voice is getting. This album is very subtle, dark, and profound. After multiple listens, you discover new things about each song. The music and lyricism in this and Attack on Memory make me not want to listen to their "poppy" stuff anymore. They've made a stable stance as to what sound they want to produce and deliver, which has a sound unlike any I've ever heard.

Cool

Single sounds good... I'll check out the album when it releases.

Good Album

I have had this preordered, and the album was leaked today. Great Album just as good as the last one

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Cloud Nothings' prolific lo-fi pop is the brainchild of Dylan Baldi, a Cleveland, Ohio native who was still in his teens when the buzz about his music started. Baldi was majoring in audio recording at college when he dropped out to focus on his home recordings. After a few months, he uploaded the songs "Hey Cool Kid" and "Whaddaya Wanna Know" to his MySpace page, which led to gigs with Woods and Real Estate, and 2010 singles released via Group Tightener and Old Flame Records. That year, Cloud Nothings...
