Album Review

Like Britney Spears before her, Demi Lovato pretty much admits in the title of her sophomore album that she's serving up more of the same the second time around, but unlike Britney, that may not have been Demi's intention. For Here We Go Again, Lovato makes a relatively clean break from the Jonas Brothers, who penned much of her debut, Don't Forget, drafting sensitive AAA singer/songwriters Jon McLaughlin and John Mayer presumably to give Lovato a bit of mature veneer, a subtle shift buried underneath the relentlessly cheerful Radio Disney production and Lovato's irrepressible spunk. Both sonic characteristics tend to camouflage Demi's biggest moves away from teen pop — the fussy balladeering of "Falling Over Me," the mock-Mraz jazz-pop "Every Time You Lie," the sober soul searching of the Mayer collaboration "World of Chances," the Celtic flair of "Gift of a Friend" — which also happen to be the very things that make Here We Go Again not quite as much fizzy fun as Don't Forget. Not quite as much fun, but still fun, particularly when Lovato tears into hooky power pop like "Here We Go Again," "Solo," "Remember December," and the stomping "So Far So Great," the theme song to the TV show Sonny with a Chance, songs that are ideally matched to Lovato's adolescent energy and spirit, which remain her most appealing qualities.

Demi Lovato: NOT your everyday Disney star!

OK let me start off by saying Demi Lovato is amazing and deserves much much more than being categorized with any other Disney artist. This new album is testament and I am so excited to review such a quality album by a quality artist. Here We Go Again - 8/10 Demi’s first single off this album and a very fun and energetic song to open the album. Overall the song is great, from the alluring opening guitars to the dynamic verses towards the end. This happens to be the only song Demi did not write in this album (save the bonus tracks) and I think the lyrical quality is consequently not up to par compared to the rest of the songs in the album. Solo - 9/10 This is probably the catchiest song in the album. I cannot get enough of the chorus; I played it on repeat over and over when I first heard it. Add to that the clever lyrics and excellent vocals and you got yourself a hit! U Got Nothin' On Me - 10/10 Despite the weird beginning which I won’t let affect its score, this song is extremely fitting for Demi’s voice. The song is catchy, meaningful, and very fun. One of the best songs in the album without question and we are just getting started! Falling Over Me – 10/10 This song is extremely relatable for me personally. Demi wrote this with Jon McLaughlin and I believe he does some background vocals as well. The song is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Quiet – 8/10 Quiet is a strong and energetic rock ballad that fits perfectly between two of the softest songs in the album. It is a great song with interesting lyrics but it doesn’t really stand out for me nearly as much as many other songs in the album. I love the way Demi says “HERE” though. Catch Me - 10/10 The "Don't Forget" of this album and it also happens to be my personal FAVORITE of this album. Demi wrote this a while ago in her bedroom back in Texas. I am so glad Disney allowed her old stuff to make it on a record. The lyrics and melody are great but the best part is how touching the song is. There is an intangible quality to this song that truly makes it like no other. Every Time You Lie – 10/10 This song fits Demi’s vocal style perfectly and I believe it represents the kind of songs she should continue to sing. The song features a sort of bluesy “Behind Enemy Lines” feel and Demi’s vocals really shine here and the song itself sounds superb. Got Dynamite - 10/10 This is easily one of the best songs on the album. This song was very well written and has a very unique sound. Demi's vocals are also showcased very well here. This might be one of those songs that you have to give a second or third listen to but it didn’t take long for me to recognize the masterpiece that is 'Got Dynamite.' Stop The World – 8/10 Demi wrote this one with Nick Jonas. It is a pretty energetic song with a catchy chorus but it isn’t one of my favorites, it is one of the more “Disney” songs in my opinion. This is a great song to tap your feet to nonetheless. World of Chances – 9/10 Demi hooked up with John Mayer to write this one. John’s influence in this song is clear and it really is a lovely song featuring beautiful lyrics, vocals and background instrumentals. Remember December – 9/10 Demi's favorite song in the album and it isn't hard to see (or hear) why. I thought the beginning was a bit overproduced (live version sounds better) but this is just one of those songs you can't help but jump and dance to. Definitely the most "rock" song in the entire album and Demi pulls it off very well! Everything You're Not – 10/10 I cannot think of a better song to close the album (again, not counting bonus tracks). The song features attitude, dramatic transitions between verses that keep you on your feet and of course the excellent vocals and lyrics that you would expect after hearing the rest of the album. Gift Of A Friend - 7/10 This song is a song Demi recorded for Tinkerbell. It has very fluffy lyrics but it actually sounds pretty good and Demi's vocals here are phenomenal. So Far So Great - 7/10 This is the second bonus track that Disney decided to stick in here. Everybody knows this song from "Sonny With A Chance" but it just looks silly compared to the other songs in this album. Still, I can't help but bob my head to the beat of this song and it was very well produced. This album is a vast improvement from Demi's last, and I do like the last one very much! Yes, I realize there are many 10/10s and I would not edit a single one because those songs are must listens in my opinion. Every song in this album have their place and I feel this is easily the most credible album a Disney artist has ever produced. This album is a definite buy.

Better than I expected

Due artists like Miley Cyrus, "Disney" artists have been given sort of a bad rep for having "minimal" talent producing bubble gum pop. Trust me, Demi Lovato is far from being the stereotypical "Disney" star. For starters, her vocal range is very good for someone her age. Her music actually has meaning and people can relate to her lyrics and I mean everyone, not just teens. One of the stand out tracks in my opinion would be Every Time You Lie. It's very different, very soulful and a tune you can just bob your head to while driving. Another track worth mention is Quiet, this song has a very Paramore-esque feel to it. In other words if you are looking a fun, album that has passion and topics you can relate to, just go ahead and buy it. It's worth the money. By the way this review is coming from a 25 year old male who mainly listens to ska and punk.
