Album Review

"My Band," the debut single from D12's sophomore album, D12 World, is the group's greatest moment and a great introduction to the way they work. Very little else on D12 World is as exciting as "My Band," the catchy explanation of what this group (or band, or whatever you want to call it) is, and one of the best productions to ever come out of Shadyville. It's also the tamest track on D12 World, an album that's proudly sick in the head. D12 are B-list players in the world of Shadyville (addressed on "My Band" when a fan asks, "Where's Obie and Dre?"), but they're the Three Stooges meets Andrew Dice Clay with that Detroit horror-show edge, which makes them like nothing else in the rap world. ICP might trade in the same sickness as the group, but D12 have better skills and more street cred, and they also have Bizarre. He's Kool Keith on earth, smoking Newports, carrying a blowup doll, and owning every track he appears on. His grotesque masterpiece is "Just Like U," a horrific exchange between parent and child that's so disgusting the edited version of the album totally drops it. Bizarre declares, "When Mos Def hear dis/He probably suffocate me," but it's hardly the only track that would make a humanist's stomach churn. "Get My Gun" and "Bitch" are just as irresponsible, but the group must not be sick enough to repel the socially conscious hero of the moment, Kanye West. His production work on the title track gives the album another highlight, while Dr. Dre is at the helm for the quirky and dark "American Psycho II," killer track number three. Eminem rules the first two songs, and sporadically pops up throughout the album, but don't expect any of the usual reflection. His raps are concerned with his relationship to D12 and hip-hop in total or they focus on his numerous beefs, most prominent being his one with Benzino. That's hard to relate to unless you have a beef with Benzino yourself, but fans who look at D12 albums as updates on the soap opera that is Eminem's career should eat it up. The album feels more slapped together than their debut — and there's a dry spell in the middle — but since Eminem spends a lot of time in the background it does do a better job of developing the careers of Swift, Proof, and mostly Bizarre. Check it for his raps and the excellent "My Band," but leave your taste and morality at home.

What Would We Do Without Eminem?

I wrote a review for the Edited version of this CD a long time ago. Let me tell you that explicit is A LOT better. Here's my opinion on each song: Git Up- 9.5/10 A cool beat and the chorus is great. One of my favorite songs on this album. Loyalty- 8/10 Even though it has hardly any Eminem (he's only in the Intro for a couple seconds), it (like Git Up) has a great beat and Kon Artis fits the chorus. Just Like U- I don't really know that much about this song because I only own the Edited. I'll Be Damned- 7/10 Not that good of a song and Edited makes it worse. No Eminem in this song. My Band- 10/10 A great joking song and a huge hit with a lot of Eminem. U R the One- 7/10 Like "I'll Be Damned", it has no Eminem and Edited is bad. However, the slightly catchier beat makes it a bit better. There's also a video for this song. 6 In the Mornin'- 9.5/10 I love this song, mostly because it has a lot of Eminem and the chorus is tight (Em sings the chorus). Read my review on the single for more info. How Come- 10/10 As good as My Band except more serious. Also a hit. Leave Dat Boy Alone- 8/10 This song doesn't have much meaning, but the beat is good and Em sings the chorus. Get My Gun- 9.5/10 This song is SO MUCH BETTER Explicit. Awesome. B**** - 8.75/10 Also great explicit. Em rules! D12 World- 7.75/10 Not that good title track. Basically no Eminem. 40 Oz.- 9/10 One great song that's a hit. Not that much Em here either. American Psycho 2- 8.5/10 The first one's better, but this is still good. Not that much Slim AGAIN (still some, though). Good Die Young- 8.25 AGAIN no Eminem, but it's still a good, serious song by the rest of D12 Keep Talkin'- 9/10 A lot of Eminem this time. Nice bonus track. The red explicit sign makes me all tingly inside!

D12 World

This album is a pretty good album, in my opinion. It has no flow, however, and seems to have single tracks pasted in random places. Devil's night has a much better flow. But the individual songs on here are better than the ones on devil's night. I'll rate all of the songs besides the skits. Git Up: 9/10. Eminem is heavily involved in this track, which is what makes it so great. He is by far the best rapper in the group. He has a really long part in the beginning where he is rapping in a funny but good style. You keep thinking it's going to stop, but it never does. A really fast paced beat. Loyalty: 8/10. Eminem takes a break here, (except for a short intro part) and Obie Trice, better than any of the other members besides eminem, takes his place. The pace slows down a little bit, but it is still a good fast pace. This is an underrated song. Just like U: 5/10. This is just Bizarre straight. It is a conversation between he and his son. It would be disturbing from anyone else besides Bizarre. Because of him, you know it's all just a joke. It's really obscene though. Kind of a pointless song with a lame beat. Not worth buying. I'll be Damned: 6/10. I loved this song the first time I heard it, but I don't like it anymore. Get's old really quick. Kind of a weird, bouncy beat that gives an odd, late-night feel to the track. Not worth buying, either. My Band: 10/10. I don't really know what to make of this song. I loved it the first twenty times I heard it, but now I hate it. It's really annoying. But hey, it's thier most popular song ever and probably doubled what thier album sales would've been without it. I know this song is the reason I bought this album. And for that, this song deserves the highest rating possible, because it's definitely the MVP of this album. U R the One: 3/10. No eminem, which puts the song in a hole from the beginning. Pretty much a song about girls with a bad hook and beat. Probably my least favorite song on the album. Why did they make a video of this? 6 in the Morning: 10/10. They released this as a single. It's a good song. But for some reason, the fans don't love it like I think that they should. It really has a good mood, kind of like an early-morning setting, and that's not just because of the title. Eminem is heavily involved again, and this track is very comparable to Git up, just a little more laid-back. In my opinion, it's better though. Definitely a buy. How Come: 10/10. Thier second single from this album, and it's the second most known after My Band. I think that they centered the album around this song. It's really good, again with a heavy dose of eminem. Most of you have already heard it, so I wont explain it too much. You should buy it if you don't already have it. Leave Dat Boy Alone: 4/10. A crappy track. Really crappy beat and hook. Kind of like a bad version of Get My Gun. Don't buy this. Get My Gun: 10/10. This is the track I listen to most on this album. Just an all-out brawl is the main topic of this song. I love the hook and the intro. Bizarre deliveres a hilarious segment at the end. Buy this, its way underrated. B***h: 7/10. A hate-song against women. Feminists shouldn't buy this. Simple beat, yet effective. Probably will be more well loved in clubs than for casual listeners, it's kind of shallow. D12 World: 6/10. This is a confusing song. I don't really like it though. You can't really pinpoint the beat at any point, it's all kind of a muck. The lyrics are unoriginal though, and this isn't a good song. 40 oz.: 10/10. I love this song. It's a fight song, kind of like fight music, but with a more serious attitude. The beat is great and the lyrics are good. The pace isn't fast or slow, and the mood is dark, a sort of late-night. Good song. American Psycho 2: 8/10. A really slow, dark pace. But the members of D12 deliver thier regular, non-serious raps despite the mood. A guest rapper, I think B-real of Cypress Hill, delivers a good rap. Interesting song. Good die Young: 10/10. Only good track without eminem. really meaningful, so much raw emotion. This is my favorite track on the album. Keep Talkin: 8/10. I like the beat, but the lyrics seem to just be the lyrics of a mixtape. They have no basis or common subject. A pretty good song despite that.
