iTunes Editors’ Notes

Romy Madley Croft’s emaciated whisper was a voice that shook the indie rock world in 2009. Her fragile delivery gives the impression that she’s searching out her very last breath, plumbing the depths of her brokenhearted, desire-driven world while bandmate Oliver Sim answers in seemingly emotionless, measured utterances. The dynamic of the two singers is set against a backdrop of lonely, delicate guitar notes, warmly pulsing beats from Jamie Smith, and spare, stifled basslines; it's something one might expect from more seasoned players, not kids barely out of art school. The English group’s debut went on to win that country’s 2009 Mercury Music Prize and topped countless year-end lists both abroad and stateside. The xx exudes a sensual intimacy that almost invokes some level of guilty pleasure in the listening—it’s more like eavesdropping, but one party invited you, so it’s okay. Melding influences as disparate as late-night soul, gothy alt-rock (The Cure), and early British postpunk Cherry Red heroes like Young Marble Giants, the forces at work here are smart, reverent, and clearly devoted to making music that will last longer than the average first love.

Customer Reviews

Basic Space, Open Air

As an aspiring music-maker, The xx are an inspiration. Their simple no-frills music, head bobbing beats, and shoe gazer style makes the talent shine right through. Smooth, sustaining guitar licks and pounding bass helps to drive the breathy vocals throughout the album. Their keyboard work is easy and effective.

Seeing them live put a smile on my face and then caused my jaw to drop. The lyrics pierced right through me, the drum work made me want to dance in my seat, and the reverb spoke to my soul.

I can't stop listening to this album. I just saw them earlier tonight and can easily say they are the next big thing. There is nothing masking their raw talent, just pure music. xx is my album of the year

You will not be disappointed.

loved it.

I used to be a total mainstream pop music listener(I'm a girl). About a year ago I started listening to alternative music, and I totally switched my music taste at that point. If you like alternative music, a nice slow song, or just something calm to listen to, I highly suggest listening to the Xx. They are amazing and quite talented. Love the vocals.

Amazing band!

My friend had recommended The XX to me when he knew that I was in love with Chromatics and knew i would fall in love with this one. The Lo-Fi beats and everything just blows me awaym even the new songs that haven't been released yet are even amazing. To me the XX are like the Wyld Stallyns in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. They will become the Earth's core to Utopia.

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Atmospheric English indie pop group the xx formed in London in 2008 around the talents of Romy Madley Croft, Oliver Sim, Baria Qureshi, and Jamie Smith, when the bandmembers were still in high school. Captivating and cool, the group cites influences that run the gamut from R&B (Aaliyah and Rihanna) to classic alternative rock (the Cure and the Pixies). Built around the duel vocals of Croft and Sim, the group's signature brand of moody, soulful indie rock first appeared on the public radar in...
