iTunes Editors’ Notes
Keep It Hid is the first solo album by the guitarist and singer of the Black Keys, and it’s nothing shy of amazing. Dirty, gritty, at times spooky, and unrelentingly funky, it’s less a departure from his work with Patrick Carney in the Black Keys, and more of a full-bodied extension of that band’s sound and feel. With a diverse yet cohesive set of songs, Auerbach delivers powerhouse rock-n-soul (“Mean Monsoon,” “The Prowl,” “My Last Mistake”), hook-filled heavy blues (“I Want Some More,” “When I Left the Room”), and moving, world-weary ballads (“Trouble Weighs a Ton,” “Whispered Words (Pretty Lies),” “When the Night Comes”). Along with guitar, Auerbach also plays drums, percussion, and keyboards here, but this is much more than just a one-man effort. He brought in a handful of friends and family to help fill out the sound, as well as to help write some of the tunes, and this added dimension helps reveal other sides of Auerbach’s songwriting talents. He's a deeply soulful and emotional singer who's able to tap into dark themes of isolation, betrayal, and regret, and somehow make it a cathartic experience. Fans of the Black Keys will flip for Keep It Hid, as should about anyone else within earshot.
Customer Reviews
Absolutely Incredible
The best way to describe this spectacular debut from Dan Auerbach is to tell Black Keys fan that it sounds like Black Keys, just on acid. Trust me, this formula works. This is one of the best albums I have heard all of high school (currently a junior). We all knew the Black Keys rocked, one of the coolest bands to break through in the Aughts, had a genuine vintage sound but didn't try too hard, all that good stuff. And when us fans heard there was a solo Auerbach record coming out, we had our doubts. I certainly had mine. But I heard I Want Some More on MySpace, before the album came out, and my jaw fell to the floor. It was better than the Black Keys. It was blues, but muddier, rawer, groovier, sexier. I started counting down the days until Keep It Hid hit the shelves. And as I ran home, tearing off the shrinkwrap of Keep It Hid on February 10 when it came out, I knew this would grow to be one of my lifelong favorite albums as I started listening to it. Let's review: 1. Trouble Weighs A Ton - 3/5 - Good song, a little bland. Sweet though, like all his. 2. I Want Some More - 5/5 - Rockish with blues. A groovy pyschadelic mess that works wonders. 3. Heartbroken, In Disrepair - 4/5 - Title says a lot. Starts off with a wobbly guitar part and rolls from there. 4. Because I Should - 3/5 - Just a quick interlude 5. Whispered Words (Pretty Lies) - 5/5 - Songs gave me shivers when I first listened. My FAVORITE from the album. 6. Real Desire - 4/5 - A sprawling gospel like song that lurches and moans at every turn. I love it. 7. When the Night Comes - 5/5 - An absolutely beautiful lullaby, helped me fall asleep in total bliss. 8. Mean Monsoon - 4/5 - Surf rock song! Traces of Dick Dale are in here, along with the blues and his soulful voice. 9. The Prowl - 4/5 - One of the heaviest of the album, rocks hard all through, bouncy guitar part. 10. Keep It Hid - 5/5 - I described this to my brother as being so good that it hurt. My stomach twisted when I listened to it loud. It's very menacing and hot, I love it. 11. My Last Mistake - 5/5 - A wonderful song. Countryish and poppy, real catchy and fun. Very different from any Black Keys album. 12. When I Left The Room - 5/5 - A really awesome guitar part! Builds up and keeps on chugging. Really, the riff is to die for. 13. Street Walkin' - 4/5 - This is, believe it or not, punkish in my opinion. Reminds me of Iggy Pop prancing around in leather. 14. Goin' Home - 4/5 - Cute outro for the album. Not a good single, but perfects the flow of this masterpiece. And it IS a masterpiece. I recommend this to absolutely everyone. I just know that it will still be in rotation throughout summer, and it already has a place in my "Top 5 Albums" list. Buy this, I gurantee you'll dig it. I sure do.
Sensational
Dan's first solo album sounds as if it were cut in '62 and still sounds ahead of the current music today. I Want Some More is the best song I've heard in '09. The Prowl and My Last Mistake are timeless classics. This album is sensation from top to bottom, through and through. Dan Auerbach might be the rock savior very few people saw coming; this album is an instant classic. Album of the year.
This is not The Black Keys
The Black Keys are without a doubt my favorite band. However, I can see why Dan Auerbach wanted to release a solo album. The music on this album is completely different from the style of The Black Keys and gives Aerbach a chance to explore other avenues without changing the direction of his band. I have been so complacent with music lately that it is almost a shock to hear both the collaborative and solo efforts displayed with both these endeavors. Buy all of The Black Keys albums, and buy this album. Enjoy music on a deeper level again.
