iTunes Review

Ashlee Simpson is nostalgic for an era she’s too young to remember first-hand. Born in 1985, the younger sister of reality-TV (and oh yeah, music) superstar Jessica is steeped in the ‘80s heyday of Joan Jett and Pat Benatar. Like her debut Autobiography, I Am Me plays like a missive from a talented Valley girl’s bedroom. One song (“Burning Up”) borrows its title from an MTV-favorite track from the first Madonna album, while another, “Dancing Alone,” takes verbal cues from Billy Idol and the Cure. The strongest cut, “Boyfriend,” is the kind of bratty snipe that Jett would’ve been proud to snarl in her commercial prime. Given Jett’s ties to the golden age of manufactured pop (her cover of “Crimson and Clover” in particular), Simpson is more closely related to this ‘80s superstar than to her own blood sibling.

Get Off of the Bandwagon...

I'm a musician. I've been playing music for over 20 years. I am better than most people and my standards are high. Guess what? I like this CD as I did her last CD. I think the SNL thing was great. The reaction people had showed how little anyone really knows about the music industry. The SNL incident is what got me interested in Ashlee in the first place. I heard all the bad press. I saw all of the emails that went out. I saw numerous websites bashing her... but unlike most people, I have a brain and am capable of independenty thought.... So I gave it a listen and I like it. Ashlee is the unfornunate target of bandwagon mentality. Look at the other reviews of this CD and see how many people are SOOO anxious to talk bad about Ashlee Simpson. Most of the people writing these reviews don't own her CD, never listened to her music, aren't really into pop, and only wrote these reviews so that they could email their friends and say, "Look at what I wrote about Ashlee Simpson on iTunes. Isn't it cool!" This thing isn't about Ashlee Simpson... It's about the bandwagon, AS USUAL. It became hip to criticize her, so everyone looked around and thought... "If I make fun of Ashlee Simpson, people will like and accept me!" So out go the emails, and a crowd of cattle at a football game “boo” her. How sad... Develop an opinion of your own, people. Don’t just do what everyone else does. Most of you talking bad about this little girl don’t give a damn about music or know anything ABOUT music. If you did, you wouldn’t be booing at football games and talking about one little girl as if she ruined the music industry…. It was ruined a long time ago.

Another Hit!

Ashlee's back and stronger than ever...and she has reason to be. After her career went for a run on the bad side, she didn't let that stop her. Instead it inspired her ("Catch Me When I Fall" & "Beautifully Broken"); these songs have to deal with the infamous SNL ordeal where she was caught lip-synching on live TV! But though it was scandalous she proved herself again this fall and blew us away. This new album has a lot of amazing music and you can tell how much she has matured in through the music. There are some dancey-pop songs like "L.O.V.E." and "Burning Up" which kind of reminds us of Madonna's early days. And the most beautiful part of the album is "Catch Me When I Fall". Enjoy.

as if the cover isn't bad enough...

ugh i hate using this over-used word...but ashlee is such a POSER. this is not hardcore...its ridiculous! i wish she'd at least be honest and admit she's a pop star like her sister and NOT a punk. the video for "boyfriend" is awful (maybe even worse than "Lala", although thats hard to say). she copies Jessica's dance moves then adds her own dreadful moves. her dancing has NOT improved since that episode on SNL. this hardly deserves one star. oh well.

She might be the younger sister of superstar Jessica Simpson, but don't confuse their tastes or style when it comes to music. Waco, Texas-born Ashlee Simpson always loved music. At age 11 she was the youngest person ever admitted into the School of American Ballet. At 14 she moved with her parents and older sister to Los Angeles and spent time dancing in Jessica's stage show.
