The LP version of ZZ Top’s breakthrough 1973 album Tres Hombres featured in its gatefold a huge photo close-up of Tex-Mex food in all its refried greasy glory. In many ways, ZZ Top’s career is defined by that image: uncultured, uncomplicated, and at times indigestible, but always authentically American. Like James Brown and Chuck Berry, ZZ Top are fundamentalists and over the course of their almost 40-year career their recipe has remained almost entirely unchanged. As teenagers they reduced blues to a few power chords and a steel-coated shuffle and they haven’t looked back since. What is amazing is how well ZZ Top have always managed to fit into their surroundings. In the Seventies they shared bills with both B.B. King and Bad Company. After reinforcing their sound with rumbling synthesizers and drum machines, the Eighties found ZZ Top sharing space on MTV with Billy Idol and Huey Lewis. The group has always been as comfortable on Miami Vice as there are in Texas mud. This immense two-disc collection skips over several of the band’s Nineties hits, but that matters very little. Even before the second disc starts, you’ll be able to feel the grease and exhaust coursing through your veins.

bothersome mixes

a comprehensive collection for sure, but the mixes of some of the songs on this album are not the original mixes. they are the drum-enhanced "KLOS Six-Pack" versions, not the tight & dry production that was the signature sound of most of the stuff before "eliminator." most people won't care or notice because those are the most played on the radio now, but for picky people & die-hards this may not be for them.

Get the real CD instead!

Great songs indeed, but for some reason, most of this album's songs here on iTunes are the "wrong" versions. On the actual CD, they are the original mixes and sound far superior!

Rancho Texicano: The very best of ZZ Top

I don't know who came up with the "VERY BEST" part, maybe these sold more than others but without Somebody else been shaking your tree, sure got cold after the rain fell, cheverolet and apologies to Pearly you can't really say those are the very best. The first two albums were on fire with rockers and stoners from Texas up through Arkansas and weren't on any pop charts we listened too. They were FM which was new and didn't have the AM range. One person would collect enough deposit bottles, buy a few beers and we would all listen over an over. You might be disappointed but you'll still dig it if your a true fan. Glad the remembered Francine!
