Editors’ Notes
Little Voice (the self-assured 2007 Sara Bareilles album) has just about zero in common with Little Voice (the sentimental 1998 Michael Caine film). There’s nothing diminutive about this Northern California-born singer/songwriter’s talent or ambition. On this, her major label debut, Bareilles sings with great poise and fluidity, embroidering her vocals with bluesy slurs and jazzy tics without losing her essential pop clarity. Her lyrics sparkle with personality and her affection for melody is displayed especially well in such bouncy tracks as “Love on the Rocks,” “Fairytale” and “Bottle It Up.” Bareilles invites comparisons with Fiona Apple on the jittery “Vegas” and Sarah McLachlan on the melancholy “Gravity.” What’s distinctive about her persona, though, is the resiliency and lust for life she projects — even when grappling with the mysteries of attraction in songs like “Come Round Soon” or “Morningside,” the strength of her inner spirit is evident. Touches of piano-lounge balladry and hip-hop bring added character to the album’s mainstream pop/rock base. On Little Voice, Bareilles succeeds on just about every level — and that’s no small feat.
Customer Reviews
Long Overdue.
I'm tickled pink to be the first to review Sara's first album release! As a UCLA student in Sara's formative years, I've followed her music for a good 8 years now. She's an all around phenomenal artist--a voice that'll melt you, lyrics all her own and a sound that she's fiercely proctected from the encroaching industry editors. She wrote "Gravity" and "City" early in college and even after 8 years of shifting and refining they still hold their beauty. "Vegas" will make every man in a 100 mile radius of her piano sweat. The music industry has moved away from artists like sara bareilles who can write beautifully, sing phenomenally, master their instrument and remain humble...maybe she'll turn a few heads back her way...
Not such a "Little Voice" at all!!!
I first discovered Sara Bareilles when iTunes picked "Love Song" to be the free single of the week. I listened to more of her music online, and within a day, she was already one of my favorite artists. Her voice is one of the purest, most gorgeous voices I have ever heard. Just to be clear, I listen to a great deal of music (I have almost 3,000 songs in my iTunes library), and I have never fallen in love with an artist's music this fast. Sara is such an outstanding artist: not only is she a brilliant vocalist who gives me chills with her high notes, but she is also a pianist and a phenomenal songwriter who writes intelligent, insightful, and heartfelt lyrics! And I might add, her deft and graceful piano playing beautifully complements her voice. "Little Voice" is one of the best CDs I've ever heard, pure and simple. It's so rare that an ENTIRE CD is full of excellent songs, completely free of filler! On songs like "Between the Lines," "City," and "Gravity," Sara's voice effortlessly glides up to the high notes and back down again, mesmerizing and full of emotion. On one of the more upbeat tracks, the delightfully clever "Fairytale," Sara rejects the idea of fairytale love, while putting a more realistic spin on well-known fairytale characters. Another upbeat, catchy song, "Bottle It Up," is Sara's defiant response to her record label's attempts to change her music. The lyrics to this song, like others on the album, are very empowering to women, which is so refreshing to hear. Many listeners will be able to relate to Sara's confessional lyrics, which range from a sense of heartfelt vulnerability (i.e. "One Sweet Love," "Gravity") to defiance and self-assuredness (i.e. "Love Song," "Come Round Soon," "Fairytale"). My strong recommendation would be to buy this entire album, not just one track or a few tracks. You won't regret it! There is not a single song that is poorly written, sung, or arranged. Every song has its own sparkle, its own sound, its own something to say, and every song is worth hearing! After hearing this inspired collection of songs, I am completely hooked, and I think this album will make many more instant fans out of its listeners.
Sara Bareilles Is Next Big Thing...
Well, for me at least. Like many other users, I discovered Sara last week when an edited version of 'Love Song' was released as the U.S Single Of The Week. I immediatly fell in love with the song and I craved more from this pop songstress. I saw this week that she had released her CD, 'Little Voice', and I immediatly knew that I must have it. But I don't have a money tree in my backyard so I knew that I couldn't dish out the normal $9.99 that iTunes makes us pay for a whole CD. But to my delighted surprise the CD was only $6.99. I took up the great offer and now this masterpiece of music is constantly playing in my iTunes library. The whole CD is incredible but here are some must-by songs: MUST BUY SONGS: -Love Song--9.8/10--Now, if you didn't already know, the SOTW version was the edited version of the song. I think iTunes was stupid for editing it because this version is absolutly incerdible. It has the same effect as Lily Allen: it sounds sweet and romantic at the first listen but if you go a bit deeper you realize that this is an independent anthem instead. -Bottle It Up--9.8/10--The beginning immeditaly entrances you into the song and the reacurring 'love' is absolutly addictive. -Come Round Soon--9.9/10--The intense raw edge to this song will draw you in from the very first second to the very last. One of the reasons I love this song so much is because she hits that incredible note when singing about the angels. It is Sara that indeed has the voide of an angel. -Love On The Rocks--10/10--Another song that boosts female independence. Plus it has this incredible line "But you're a lovely creation, I think that I am too...but my friends said I look better without you". Then there is that memorable section of the song where things slow down and become a bit more...well, race-y and sensation. "Hot as hell, cold as ice, sip it slow 'cause it's so nice, doze my senses, dries my pain, I'd do it again, burns a bit to the touch, dangerous if it's too much, if this bottle could talk, love on the rocks". And yet again she hits another incredible note! A real hit she has created with this song. Fairytale--9.9/10--Another song of female empowerment. Really catchy too. The very beginning is the part that really drew me in. The song involves certain princesses and damsels in distress of popular fairytales [i.e, Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel] but Ms. Bareilles puts a new spin on the tales. A catchy example is "Cinderella's on her bedroom floor, she's got a crush on the guy at the liquor store, 'cause Mr.Charming don't come home anymore and she forget's why she came here". Gravity--10/10--I want this song to be played at my wedding. And every anniversary I will ever have. It is truly one of the best songs on the CD if not the very best. Just everything about this song is perfect. I especially love the line "You hold me without touching". She put so much heart and soul and emotion into this song, I just want it to play forever and never stop. This is one of those songs where the emotion will just come at you more and more every time you hear it. And the note she had on the word 'down' was absolutly incredible. This song has made Sara one of my favorite singers ever. 'Gravity' exceeds all expectations I had ever had of her and it makes me just want more of her music. Plus, the line "You're onto, onto me, and all over me" at the end was sung with such...emotion and a hint of playfulness i suppose, was simply addictive. OVERALL ALBUM GRADE: A+++
