iTunes Editors’ Notes

The Very Best Of Freddie Mercury Solo — Lover of Life, Singer of Songs was released on September 4th, 2006 – the day Mercury would have celebrated his 60th birthday. It tastefully compiles standout tracks from both of his solo albums, 1985’s Mr. Bad Guy and 1988’s Barcelona, as well as songs that he recorded for musical soundtracks, various remixes, and some really interesting pre-Queen recordings from 1973, when Mercury sang under the Larry Lurex pseudonym for cover versions of Phil Spector’s “I Can Hear Music” and the Carole King/Gerry Goffin hit “Goin’ Back.” The former boasts Mercury singing androgynous falsettos over a “Wall of Sound” style pioneered by Spector, while the latter sounds closer to Dusty Springfield’s piano ballad but with more a more urgent vocal performance. Other highlights include a remix of the dramatic “In My Defence” from Dave Clark’s 1986 musical Time and the 1984 single mix of “Love Kills,” a mid-tempo, post-disco dance number. Bookending with an a cappella rendering of “Let’s Turn It On” makes for an intimate insight to the man’s powerful vocal soul.

Customer Reviews

Never the pretender, just the greatest!

A pity it took this long and his passing to release Freddie Mercury's solo projects like his Techno tribute to the film METROPOLIS "Love Kills" and his contribution to the Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona, but it was well worth the wait. In another time, this man would be like a troubadour and no doubt many would pay him fine gold coin for an evening of his songs and banter. Perhaps he was both a man out of his time and ahead of it like his spiritual namesake Duncan MacCloud of HIGHLANDER, the film Queen made cult with its rich and powerful sound. Savor his love of music and his fellow man with his duets with opera divas (fitting since he was a diva on his own terms) and his overwhelming solos that would fit in the Great Masters works of European opera. I reckon if he hadn't gotten AIDS, he would've joined fellow musical great Sting in adapting the old love songs of the Middle Ages and added his own flair for his fans. Truly a great artist and a loss to humanity with his passing. All Freddie Mercury fans should buy this album to see a side of him that is both separate and equal to his work with Queen. A fine and worthy supplement to their catalog.

Sheer Perfection

What can be said about the great Freddie Mercury that that has not been said already. He was one of the greatest vocalist, songwriters, muscians and front man ever to grace the world stage. It is evident with his work with Queen and this solo collection is by far wonderous. He is in great form on all these tracks, performace and writing wise. You can hear his power and emotions on IN MY DEFENSE, his versatiliy and genius on the tracks with Montserrat Caballe, which no other "rock" singer could pull so effortlessly and these tracks are written by Mr Mercury and classical muscian Mike Moran. This set is playful and just full of life without any dissapointments.

Combining theatrics and an outrageously flamboyant stage persona with his fine natural-born talent (he possessed one of the greatest voices in all of music and penned some of pop's most enduring and instantly recognizable compositions), one of rock's greatest all-time entertainers/showmen was unquestionably Queen vocalist Freddie Mercury. Born Farrokh Bulsara on September 5, 1946, in Zanzibar to Persian parents (his father worked as a high court cashier for the British government), young Farrokh...
