iTunes Editors’ Notes
For Pavement’s swan song, the once lo-fi group come full circle, allowing Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich to slicken their sound until they resemble a smooth running pop group with just enough attitude and guitar punch to never lose their individuality. With singer Stephen Malkmus guiding the band’s melodies and one-liners there’s little worry of total conventionality. However, that doesn’t mean the gentler approach doesn’t require some getting used to. This is a band that made its reputation based on a sound often on the verge of a nervous breakdown and hearing all the parts come together without the expected chaos can cause some great moments to slip past. Besides, everything is slower. “Spit on a Stranger,” “Folk Jam” and “You Are A Light” are lush where the band would’ve once played it tough. Malkmus doesn’t reach for his shaky upper range, but settles into a low-key Lou Reed chronicling mode. It’s as if the band has gone folk-rock. They definitely turned pro. And upon this realization decided the band had run its course, having come full circle. The end.
Customer Reviews
It's Tight yet Loose, Rips
This record is tighter than most Pavement records (thanks Nigel). Much akin to Malkmus' early solo stuff. Super rad. "Folk Jam" is the jammy jam. Some of the best lyrics ever. Totally irreverent yet apt. Not reined in but refined. Buy.
Terror Twilight
The SAT-word-spitting rhetoric of Stephen Malkmus partnered with the astronaut-on-acid production of Nigel Godrich (of Radiohead and Beck fame), what's not to like? From the opening blips and bloops of "Spit on a Stranger" to the slightly disturbing "...And Carrot Rope," this album is a trip through the spacier side of one of the nineties' most important bands. Even features Radiohead's Johnny Greenwood on harmonica. Well-worth listening to.
The Final Chapter
I have never truly understood the "bad" reviews this album got, compared to thier others. For me, this is thier most polished effort, and still has the distaste for Top 40 music as the other LPs. Pavement's outstanding quality , in my view, was that they never comformed to commercial markets, and provided the best music in the 90's. No other band has influenced the lo-fi indie scene as much as these guys, and thier harder stuff was clearly of a mocking nature towards the grunge movement. The official review by iTunes is pretty much on. You could tell that Pavement had run it's course. Somethings are meant to last a short time, but in turn due to thier brilliance will live forever. Here's to hoping the guys get together at least 1 more time and tour.
