Monsters in the Closet - Album Review
01. Ghosts – 8.5/10 – This one took a little time to grow on me. I wasn’t really expecting Queen when I got Mayday Parade’s first single. The only other thing about this song is there is no DEFINITE chorus, meaning there is a part that is the supposed chorus, but the lyrics never match, so its almost hard to tell.
02. Girls – 9.5/10 – This song is one of the gems of the album. I do wish that not all of the parts of the song were at the same volume and that there was some volume buildup because then this song would be explosive, but still very good and powerful.
03. Last Night for a Table of Two – 8/10 – This sounds almost like a Stay, 2.0. The difference is that in this one, there is more harmony, less piano, and more of the headbanging feel.
04. 12 Through 15 – 9/10 – A gem of the album, This is a sad sweet song, very much with a vibe of longing. The tone of the song along with Derek’s voice makes you almost instantly depressed, but in a beautiful way.
05. The Torment of Existence Weighed Against the Horror of Nonbeing - 7/10 This one is almost like a filler song, and reminds me a little bit of “I’d Rather Make Mistakes Than Nothing At All” from the self-titled album. Definitely a dance-like feel because of the ¾ rhythm, but not a personal favorite. Very depressing song, more like a begging feel.
06. Even Robots Need Blankets – 9/10 Another gem of the album, don’t let the title throw you or disturb you (we learn this by listening to Mayday Parade, don’t we?) This is the “Stay” of the previous album, the “The Memory” of Anywhere But Here, and the “You Be the Anchor That Keeps Your Feet On The Ground, I’ll be The Wings That Keep Your Heart in the Clouds” of A Lesson In Romantics. Beautiful song.
07. Repent and Repeat – 8/10 – This sounds almost like a not-as-powerful version of “When I Get Home, You’re So Dead”. It holds up the mysterious “closet” theme of the album, as you can tell through the verses, and a very powerful song.
08. Demons – 9/10 – There’s something about this song I really really like, and I’m not sure what it is. Maybe it’s the B-major, but if you mixed “A Shot Across the Bow” with “Oh Well, Oh Well”, you would get this. Very powerful, and fantastic lyrics.
09. Sorry, Not Sorry – 8/10 – This is one of those “relationship regret” songs. “I’m so sorry for myself…”, he says as he belts out the chorus. Very powerful, sarcastic song. I enjoyed this one, and I’m not sure why… but very good.
10. Nothing You Can Live Without, Nothing You Can Do About – 7.5/10 – This band must have found a new love of chanting, because that’s how the song starts. Another powerful song, but aside from the elements surrounding this album (harmonies, soloing guitars), this probably would have sounded good on “Anywhere But Here”. This one does, however, have better lyrics.
11. Hold Onto Me – 9/10 – This is another sweet song about seeing the best through people’s flaws. The ironic thing is, I wrote a song called “Hold Onto Me”, and it sounds kinda like this xD but aside, this is a good couple’s song, much like “Amber Lynn”.
12. Angels – 10/10 – Listening to the whole album was worth getting to this song. This song is pure perfection. This is the Mayday Parade we’ve been waiting for; this is the song that defines how we Mayday Parade fans have all felt at least once in our life. If there’s one song on this album that you get, it’s this one. If you like “Face to Face” by Divided by Friday, you’ll love this. This will be your favorite Mayday Parade song.
In a nutshell: 5/5 Stars. This album review was written while listening to the album for the first time, and after listening to it a second time, you realize that at first listen, this album may disappoint in some areas, but as you continue to listen to the words more and more, the emotion is just as much there as it always has been. As with many albums, it has its gems and its flaws, but one thing is constant. For this album, it is the emotional lyrics, harmonic guitars, and the soothing strings. (Yes, they’re in more than one song.) A definite staple in the Mayday Parade Discography.
