Editors’ Notes

In 2002, The Who's debut album received the deluxe treatment and controversy ensued. The album was mixed for stereo for the first time, but along with those mixes came variations that could unnerve a purist. Double-tracked vocals are often single-tracked, and the lead guitar parts in "My Generation" and "A Legal Matter" have gone missing. (It should be noted that the original mono versions with the guitars can be found at the tail end of the album.) These discrepancies aside, the sound of this remix is chilling. Townshend's guitars ring out as if all cobwebs have been removed, and Daltrey's single-tracked vocals sound more aggressive and powerful. The numerous bonus tracks are keepers, including alternate takes of "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere" (and an inspiring a cappella version), plus "Leaving Here" and "Daddy Rolling Stone" (different than the versions on Thirty Years of Maximum R&B). It's a generous set and an expansive new look at one of rock 'n' roll's most seminal recordings.

Customer Reviews

Best Debut Album Ever?

Possibly an overstatement, but maybe not. I really love this album, and the Deluxe Edition may have the highest quality of sound of any album from the mid 60s. Honestly, this tracks sound impeccable on this edition of the album. If you are a fan of 60s rock or the British Invasion, get this immediately. Fans of the Who already have this so......fans of the Who better have this.

Excellent

Great reissue of a classic that defined the Mod movement! The audio engineers responsible for the stereo remix got it right!

Loved it!!!!!!

Those who didn't Like it and say that u should buy the original don't understand how incredibly hard it is to find some of these songs. If u are a who fan u shouldn't care if some parts are being left out or not it's appreciating the knowledge of how they used to sound and enjoying what they use to play. I am glad sooo glad and I found this and love listening to it!

Few rock & roll bands were riddled with as many contradictions as the Who. All four members had wildly different personalities, as their notorious live performances demonstrated: Keith Moon fell over his drum kit while Pete Townshend leaped into the air with his guitar, spinning his right hand in exaggerated windmills. Vocalist Roger Daltrey prowled the stage as bassist John Entwistle stood silent, the eye of the hurricane. They clashed frequently, but these frictions resulted in a decade's...
