“The problem of leisure/What to do for pleasure.” Part of the Gang of Four’s project was rendering such lyrics catchy while stretching the framework of punk rock itself. 1979 Entertainment!’s attack on rock clichés dovetailed with their inquisitive sociopolitical philosophy which took on everything from the evening news to sexual attitudes to why so many other bands sang about romance so often. Go4’s music continues to influence recent bands with its adaptation of funk and reggae elements, not to mention Andy Gill’s scraping, skittering guitar. Maybe the single most significant document of the postpunk movement, Entertainment! speaks both for itself and an entire new way of thinking. This remastered deluxe edition contains the four single sides contained on the Yellow EP,” plus two alternate versions, the previously unreleased song “Blood Free” and an in-concert “Sweet Jane.”

Almost 30 Years Later ...

... the re-mix only enhances the brilliant original songs. The four alternate/live tracks are worth the price of the entire download. Next time you listen to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, see how many of their hooks (if not entire songs) were blatantly swiped from this collection. "The change will do you, like you always knew it would ... I am kissing you goodbye, goodbye, goodbye!"

Revolutionary!!! Punk at It's Best

The Gang of 4 took on every subject with a vengence, even the mundane aspects of everyday life. Nothing was sacred, what can you expect from a band that names itself after Chinese Revolutionarys. I actually had a chance to see them in Boston, 1979 in a place called The Channel--Pylon from Athens, Ga. and Mission of Burma from Boston opened. They were almost frightning on stage, their movements matched the stop and go, gerky sound that was their trademark. They moved with an almost robotic grace. You should a been there! A reason why David Fricke of Rolling Stone called Entertainment,"not just the best debut by a British band--punk or otherwise--since the original English release of The Clash in 1977". " It's also the first real political partying record since the MC5's booty-shaking 1969 broadside, Kick Out the Jams". See what it's all about. Ray K. PS- The caption around the pictures on the album cover shows a cowboy shaking hands with an Indian. "The Indian smiles, he thinks that the cowboy is his friend. The cowboy smiles, he is glad the Indian is fooled. Now he can exploit him" That says it all about their take on the World.

Everything U2 wishes they could have been. Even the Edge has acknowledged that they wouldn't exist if Gang of Four hadn't been around. Now if only the original Shriekback albums were re-mastered
