Album Review

The Fixx's music stood out from '80s radio, even though they shared the airwaves with numerous techno bands and new wave groups. They had an intangible quality to their lyrical flow and musical rhythm that kept them from sounding like everyone else. On One Thing Leads to Another, the indistinguishable characteristics become evident as all of their best songs are played out, making for quite an amusing compilation. Four tracks do hover above the rest on this 12-song offering, opening with the clang and push of the title track, their highest charting single (number four on Billboard in 1983). The mechanical dream-like pulse of "Secret Separation" contains an unavoidable attractiveness in its chorus, and the wispy but haunting "Saved by Zero" reflects a certain science fiction motif. The paranoid "Are We Ourselves" has lead singer Cy Cumin coming off like Peter Schilling, with the chorus one step behind him in the background. The other eight songs are far from dry, complete with a hustle-and-bustle flux incorporated by clean synthesizers and ridged pop tempos, tied up with a rock styled flavor. This hits package is an enjoyable wallow through some music that surprisingly has a difference.

Looking for a song.

I'm looking for an original studio version of the song "Stand or Fall". It's one of their best song and I don't like the live version as much. Can itune get an original?

Pretty good hits collection...

This is a good start for a first listen of the Fixx. Three tracks from "Reach the Beach", their breakthrough cd. "Saved", "One Thing", and "Sign of Fire" are among the Fixx finest works. This collection also includes the great hits off each of the first 4 albums- "Red Skies" from "Shuttered Room", "Are we Ourselves?" from "Phantoms", and "Secret Seperation" from "Walkabout", and a couple of the minor hits from each cd. The "Fletch" soundtrack "Letter to Both Sides" is a nice inclusion and very rare. The main problem with this set is it is not in chronological order, luckily for you, you can iTune them into the correct chronological order (9,2,1,8,11,10,3,7,5,4,12,6). The only other problem here is that "Stand or Fall" is not the studio version. This collection has been bettered by both the 20th Century Masters collection and THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION. Or go pick all the tunes off each individual cd and be mesmerized by the smooth, fantastic sound of the Fixx.

Where are the original radio tracks?

"Red Skies" and "Stand or Fall"...why can't we get the original (as played on the radio) tracks? I was dissapointed with this purchase and The Millenium Collection.
