iTunes Review

After the stylistic detours of In the Zone and the halfhearted comeback of Blackout, Circus refocuses Britney Spears’ energies on what she does best: sexy, icy dance music. Though sometimes positioned as the successor to Madonna, Britney has always been more of an American answer to Kylie Minogue. Her voice doesn’t have the flexibility necessary to play among Madonna’s myriad musical styles, but when it comes to the throbbing pulse of “Circus,” “Shattered Glass,” and “Radar,” Britney’s cat-like come-ons work wonders. While Blackout gave the impression that Britney’s heart wasn’t entirely in it, she now sounds like she’s having a blast. Every trance-inducing dancefloor beat invites its eager listeners to design their own choreography routine. She even manages to put a twist on the same old sound with the futuristic disco funk of “Lace and Leather.” While not all of Circus offers the head rush of the whip-cracking “Womanizer,” Britney’s fifth album shows the reigning superstarlet getting her groove back.

Britney Brings a Bang with "Circus"

Even though many say that Britney didn't seem like she gave her all on "Blackout", that doesn't excuse the fact it was a fantastic dance album. It had an urban feel. "Circus" goes back to her pop roots, and there's little to no urban tracks here. In fact, it has more of a europop feel to it. But it looks like unlike "Blackout", Britney seems to want to have success with this one. Her voice is clear in each of these songs. There are no fillers on this album (No 'Get Naked', thank God!) because they seem to be influenced by all her best songs from the past. 1.) Womanizer - It's the perfect rebirth of her career. With it's catchy chorus, it feels like a mixture of 'Ooh Ooh Baby' & 'Baby One More Time'. 9.4/10 2.) Circus - While it's the perfect second single that will no doubt bring success, it feels too perfect. There's a perfect dance break. The chorus has the perfect amount of sound effects and it feels very commercial. While that's not bad, there are better songs on this album. 9.0/10 3.) Out From Under - It's a cover from some random singer, but it's perfect for Britney. She's very emotional on this song. It's very, very pretty. 9.2/10 4.) Kill The Lights - I'm glad Danja brought a really great dance track to "Circus". It'll be even better when she performs it. Very good! 9.3/10 5.) Shattered Glass - Europopdelicious. It's the opposite of 'Circus' because it would more likely cater to European audiences. And pop lovers love that more. 9.2/10 6.) If U Seek Amy - Hilarious. But in a great way. It's got that Robolesbian romp to it. Like the type that are played at clubs. It's great, and it never gets old saying 'If U Seek Amy' fast. 9.7/10 7.) Unusual U - Song of the album. It's perfect. It sounds nothing like what she's done before, and it's got a hauntingly beautiful feel to it. Icy. She's using a different color in her voice. 10/10 8.) Blur - It's reminiscent of 'Early Mornin'' on "In The Zone". It's an album track. Not a filler. Just good. 8.5/10 9.) Mmm Papi - Seeing as this seems to be about Adnan Ghalib, it just feels creepy. While trying to have the same humor as 'If U Seek Amy', it just ends up being creepy. It's still cute, though. 8.6/10 10.) Mannequin - Perfect dance music. You can't understand anything she says, but that's not important. She captures the perfect feeling that dance music needs. 10/10 11.) Lace and Leather - It's not too fast, not too slow, but not a midtempo. It's a little 80's, but it just feels like an album track. 8.6/10 12.) My Baby - While she seems to really put herself into this song, it doesn't have the same beauty as 'Someday (I Will Understand)'. 8.5/10 13.) Radar - I can't stand that this is a bonus track. They barely edited it at all. Only a couple of the vocals and harmonies are a bit different. It's still a great dance track. 9.0/10 14.) Rock Me In - Europop is definitely her specialty. If this were a single in Europe, it would be a bonafide hit. It's a Kylie-esque song. 9.1/10 15.) Phonography - Best dance she's made of her career. It's 'Freakshow' meets 'Womanizer'. 10/10 16.) Trouble - It doesn't feel like it belongs on the regular album because it's so robotized. In fact, if it were part of a separate, more dance album, it would be a great success. But it's still really good. 9.3/10 Obviously, with the lowest score being an 8.5, it's obviously a great pop album. It's just what Britney needs, and it's worth every penny you pay. Congrats, Britney.

Born: December 2, 1981 in McComb, MS

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

More than any other single artist, Britney Spears was the driving force behind the return of teen pop in the late '90s. The blockbuster success of the Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys certainly paved the way for her own commercial breakthrough, but Spears didn't just become a star — she was a bona fide pop phenomenon. Not only did she sell millions of records, she was a media fixture regardless of what she was (or wasn't) doing; among female singers of the era (many of whom followed in her footsteps),...
