Editors’ Notes

Four years after his EP Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites remade the music landscape—introducing "the drop" to mainstream pop audiences and the visage of its ragamuffin purveyor to nervous parents the world over—Skrillex releases his debut album. In the years since Scary Monsters, Skrillex (a.k.a. Sonny Moore) has become a global phenomenon, and his sound has expanded accordingly: Recess is a dizzying tour through the sonic palette of global dance music. K-Pop stars CL and G-Dragon show up on the sputtering "Dirty Vibe," legendary jungle MCs The Ragga Twins light up the album opener "All Is Fair in Love and Bro Step," and Chicago's astral-traveling MC Chance the Rapper drops a verse on the standout track "Coast Is Clear," which references drum 'n' bass with its feather-light beat. Dubstep scholars will drool over “F**k That," a fathoms-deep speaker-melter that recalls the genre's early days. But lest anyone think Skrillex is here to teach a history lesson, a song like "Recess" delivers the supple sonic textures and quizzically catchy hooks that have earned him his stripes. As erudite as it is pleasurable, Recess was worth the wait.

Skrillex did NOT copy Zomboy. Great album.

A lot of people are saying silly things like "skrillex copied zomboy" - when in FACT, all of zomboy's freaking sounds have ALWAYS been mimicking skrillex's old sounds. The brostep song is a very OLD track of Sonny's - and if you READ ZOMBOY'S RESPONSE about all this, he admits that he heard Skrillex's track a while ago and ADMITTED HE MIGHT HAVE BEEN INFLUENCED by him. Zomboy has ALWAYS had heat for straight up copying skrillex's sounds.

Sorry… I just get heated when I see a bunch of ignorant people talking badly about my most respected producer when he is nothing but a genius and a capital in the EDM community. Anyway.

Mad props on this album. Extreme creativity, diversity, Sonny has grown up. This is definitely an Album though - it's not just bangers the entire way throughout. He dabbles in glitch, trap, big room, melbourne deep house bounce, basically everything. It's an experience - and this record is truly for the people who appreciate artistry.

ABOUT TIME! :D

Great stuff, awesome how he revealed his tracks one by one on the Alien ride app. Makes it hella more enjoyable.

Immensely disappointing

I’ve been a Skrillex fan for a good while now, but I have to say this is nonsense. I’ve been waiting since last summer for this LP to come out and can’t say it was worth the wait. I’ll start with the good:

Dirty Vibe is incredible for the first 2 minutes, then it gets ruined by the rap vocals.

Ragga Bomb is also a quality track, probably my favorite on the whole album.

Recess comes to a close second to tie with Ragga Bomb in terms of my favorite.

Ease My Mind is a good song too.

I’m surprised All Is Fair In Love And Brostep made it despite the whole Zomboy fiasco, but there comes the problem. That song as well as Try It Out and Doompy Poomp have already been released earlier, so technically you’re only getting 8 new songs with this album. The other problem is that the rest of the songs that weren’t mentioned aren’t really that great. Even Bangarang EP was better than this! I honestly hope that there’s a part 2 album that Sonny has in store...

Sonny Moore found club and mainstream stardom beginning in 2008, when he swapped his gig as the frontman in post-hardcore band From First to Last for the dancefloor-oriented project Skrillex. He originally used the name for live DJ sets, but in 2009 the project moved into the studio with Skrillex remixing the likes of Lady Gaga ("Bad Romance") and Snoop Dogg ("Sensual Seduction"). In 2010, the self-released digital download EP My Name Is Skrillex appeared, combining the Benny Benassi...
