iTunes Editors’ Notes

Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee broke up at the end of the 1980s, only briefly reuniting for a couple of shows opening for Nirvana, whose leader, Kurt Cobain, was their most famous fan. Flash-forward to 2010 and the duo reunite with a new album and it’s a wonderful collection of skeletal pop songs sung with an ear towards simple hooks and perfectly scripted instrumentation. There are no wasted notes. The vocal interplay is ingenuous. “The Devil’s Inside Me” and “Turning It On” are great male-to-female pieces of sexual tension. The title track is a handclap-fueled ultra-catchy pop song. “Overweight But Over You” is exactly the kind of churning power-pop song that Cobain himself tried to write so many times. “I Hate the ‘80s” gears up with splendid 1960s guitars to mock the decade where the best music was often driven underground and left unheard. “Whitechapel” adds an extra sheen of sophistication right before the garage-rock-cum-country glee of “My God Is Bigger Than Your God.” Exquisite.

Customer Reviews

As always, NEVER disappointing !!!

I could not express the overwhelming feeling of joy I got when I discovered Francis McKee and Eugene Kelly got back together to form the post-punk legendary duo: The Vaselines ! There are two things that make this release special to me. 1. I would've never expected in 1000 years that The Vaselines would get back together to actually put out a record of new material. Eugene and Francis have done shows over the 2000's but any trace of a new album did not seem promising. 2. I'm very proud to say that this record is as shockingly as great as The Way of the Vaselines: A Complete Anthology (I believe the anthology has a different title on iTunes, but that's the title I know it as). I've always hated it when an older band I like puts out a long overdue record and they try to stay "hip" and "current." That is not the case with this release. This music represents one trademark style, and that is VASELINES ! Lyrics containing sex, religion, tongue and cheek humor, and puns. Melodic vocal choruses. Catchy musical melodies…. All of the band's trademarks are here. If you are a fan of The Vaselines, or simply just think that this might be an interesting record then click "buy" right now !

i damn near fell over when i saw this! 20 years later and they pick up right where they left off - not as easy as it sounds. the new material fits right in with their old and augmenting the duo with belle and sebastian members is so perfect i'm ashamed it didn't occur to me before. (any chance for tour dates in the future?) easily one of the most fully realized band revivals i can recall... thank you, frances and eugene - please don't make us wait another 20 years please please please

AMAZING

I listened to the preview for this is album on the Sub Pop website a couple of days before it was released and my mind was blown, this is an amazing album I highly suggest buying the entire thing.

Conventional wisdom dictates that the Vaselines might have been relegated to footnote status were it not for Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, who regularly cited the little-known Scottish quartet's influence in interviews with the music press. Cobain's gospel-spreading no doubt accelerated their rise to cult sainthood, but truth be told, the Vaselines would have gotten there sooner or later on their own accord. Lewd but naïve and...
