Editors’ Notes
As the bestselling jazz album ever, Kind of Blue has been a juggernaut since its 1959 release. It has everything going for it—the quintessentially cool Davis on trumpet, the fiery John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, the cerebral Bill Evans at the piano, and very solid support from bassist Paul Chambers, drummer Jimmy Cobb, and Cannonball Adderley (the talented but often overshadowed other saxophonist here). From the opening bass vamp of “So What” to the muted trumpet lines on “Blue in Green” to the slow groove of “All Blues” to the sentimental “Flamenco Sketches,” each tune here is now seemingly written into the DNA of jazz fans everywhere. (Happily, those who can’t get enough of this music also get outtakes and live material with this Legacy Edition.) There's an elegant simplicity to the proceedings here, realized through the much-discussed modal approach that eschews chord progressions in favor of a skeletal scale or series of scales. It seems as if there's no filter, just pure emotion articulated with a whisper and a knowing look.
Customer Reviews
It may be the best album ever recorded.
It is so good. I go long periods of time not listening to it, trying to favor more out-of-the-mainstream stuff. But every now-and-then, I'll get a little phrase from it stuck in my head and have to put it on. That happened about 10 minutes ago and even though I have listened to this record hundreds of times, I am still amazed at how freaking good it is. Every musician was at the top of his game. Every note is crisp and precise. The innovation is unparalleled. The recording quality is as good as any I have ever heard. KOB is my desert island CD. If I only had one CD for the rest of my life, it would be that one. It's good as background music while I'm working, or I can put headphones on and really get into it - the technicality of the musicians, and the chord structures. Beautiful. There's a book about the making of KOB. I've read parts of it, but the concept of modality is pretty cool. And these guys nailed it. I think they recorded it in 2 days.
Must Have
This album is my personal pick as the best jazz album of all time. Whether or not you agree it deserves its place within any music library.
Oh, Miles...
Like most albums by Miles, it seems like every time I hear one of his songs is like the first time. This version is also on the 50th anniversary LP + CD. Tears started filling my eyes when I heard it for the first time on Vinyl. Even the false starts give me chills. Pure and simple, if you were to only own one Jazz album your whole life this would have to be it.
