iTunes Review

Hip-hop purists don’t care for Flo Rida, but Flo Rida doesn’t make music for hip-hop purists. He makes muscular singalongs designed to make entire clubs explode with excitement. R.O.O.T.S. sounds a bit like the Black Eyed Peas might, if will.i.am had discarded his musical ambitions and decided to focus solely the party-hearty formula of “My Humps” and “Lets Get It Started.” “Right Round” is hybrid of headbanging hair metal and walloping disco — sure, it’s not the most sophisticated music ever, but is there anything more fun? “Available” and “Be On You,” collaborations with pop crooners Akon and Ne-Yo respectively, deliver a shimmering kind of ear candy, but it’s as easy to image Rihanna or T-Pain on the track. There are a handful of cuts that aim for the standard Southern rap recipe, but the songs that carry Flo Rida’s distinctive signature are “Jump,” “Gotta Get It,” and “Touch Me.” His hyperactive flow (marked by cascading patterns of triplets) and the tracks’ bass-driven force is enough to remind one of MC Hammer, pop-rap’s immortal party starter.

R.O.O.T.S. spells awful

There is only one way to put it. This album deserves a straight to bargain bin release. Every single song on this album sounds 100% like every other song. It is a collection of fast, generic pop/dance beats with featured artists that spew unimaginative lines that (surprise surprise) sound exactly like each other. I'm not sure why this is so popular, but buying this album is like buying a single 16 times. Why not just buy one song off this album and get the same amount of entertainment out of it as somebody who is going to pay $11.99 to listen to loops of loud synthesizers. Another problem I have with this album is the way Flo Rida raps. His lines have no cohesion with the beats he is rapping over. He just talks really, really quickly in some semblance of rhythm with the synthesizer that is playing at the moment. It sounds like he had to rap without hearing what his beats sounded like and as a result came out with a jumbled mess for a good portion of the album. The third problem I have with this isn't so much about the album, but about the perception of this album in relation to other artists. Why is it that someone like 50 Cent gets ripped apart by critics and average people alike for singing about women and money, but Flo Rida is hailed as a visionary for doing the same thing? Songs like Right Round, Touch Me, Be On You, and Sugar (the chorus of: "My lips like sugar/ My lips like sugar/ This candy got you sprung/ This candy got you sprung" doesn't exactly stand out as musical genius to me) are all about women (like any other rapper), so why hasn't this been noticed and criticized on this album? It all has to do with the deterioration of what is good music today, and the desperate search for a new rapper. Anything that is "catchy" or that you can dance to automatically becomes 'good music'. Remember Lil' Jon? His music was garbage, but his 'music' was the most played material in clubs while he was on top because it was loud (like Flo Rida), repetitive (like Flo Rida), and easy to dance to (I imagine Flo Rida fits this too). When a real rapper is discovered get back to me, but until then I'm going to steer clear of unimaginative artists like this who recycle old ideas and rap behind uninspired loops that sound good over a club stereo. A two out of five.

Wow, shame to you America

Have we really become so obsessed with catchy hooks and repetition? Are Americans really all that shallow? If you look at least ONE step further than the hooks, loud synthesizer, and repetitions you will see that this "rapper" has absolutely nothing. His lyrics are the reason for rap stereotypes, they are about money, being "all that", and women. That's it. No meaning, no ideas, just money, cockiness, and women. And if you actually look at how he's is rapping all he really is doing is talking fast over his background music. He doesn't emphasize certain parts, he doesn't unleash energy, and he doesn't even fit the background beats most of the time. So yes when you hear this you will probably say to yourself "wow so catchy, let's dance!" but please look a step further and see that this is pathetic. The fact that this "music" is a "hit" in America just shows how shallow we really are. Have some decency and don't but this. If you do just get "Right Round" since it's the best and they really all sound the same anyway. Wainting for Em's Relapse, hopefully it'll end this bad trend rap is headed for.

Flo Rida, unsurprisingly a native Floridian, is an MC who toured as a teenager with 2 Live Crew's Fresh Kid Ice and began popping up on high-profile mixtapes by 2006, most notably DJ Khaled's We the Best — on "Bitch I'm from Dade County," he appeared with the likes of Rick Ross, Trick Daddy, Trina, and Dre (of Cool & Dre). Signed to the Atlantic-distributed Poe Boy that year, he recorded Mail on Sunday, which was released in March of 2008. "Low," featuring T-Pain, was the album's lead single;...
