iTunes Editors’ Notes

Prior to The Flower Lane, Ducktails seemed to mostly function as a way for Real Estate guitarist Matt Mondanile to experiment with riffs and rhythms in a low-fi setting. His latest release kicks things up several notches by tightening the songwriting and fleshing out the arrangements. The Flower Lane owes more to ‘70s-era jazz/pop and the ‘80s hipster soul of The Style Council. Lightly funky guitars and tingling analog synths lend aural polish to “Under Cover,” the title number, and similar slices of suburban cool. Guest vocal spots by Future Shuttle’s Jessa Farkas and Cults’ Madeline Follin on, respectively, “Letter of Intent” and “Sedan Magic” add to the album’s sleek yet moody sound. The presence of indie pop unit Big Troubles can be felt in the insistent pulse of tracks like “Timothy Shy” and “Assistant Director.” Mondanile’s yearning, slightly off-key vocals contrast with the album’s surface gloss and bring out the bittersweet romantic edge in the lyrics. The closing track, “Academy Avenue,” recalls Ducktails' experimental beginnings with its woozy instrumental weave and insular, slightly unhinged outlook.

For a one man show...

Not bad at all. Theres nothing as catchy as Hamilton Road on this album, and the last two albums are way more experimental and lo-fi-ish, but if thats not your thing, than the indie pop feel of this new album should appeal to you as well. Theres something for everyone on here, and although it may be lacking the sunshine-through-your-shades feel of the last two albums at times, its definitely what I like to call, funky. Ducktails is great. Listen to Real Estate if u like his riffs, he plays beautifully on their albums

Undercover

It is reasonable to assume that this song was recorded here on earth in some studio somewhere. But without question, the guitar work had to have been created in some beautiful place that transcends the physical. From about 1:40ish to nearly the end of the song, it is as if someone entered my soul and spoke on my behalf about a mood I've tried to describe in words for years... but couldn't. I know it sounds over the top...

Amazing!

This music is heavenly.

Ducktails is the solo side project of Matthew Mondanile, a member of Ridgewood, New Jersey-based indie beach bums Real Estate. While not too dissimilar in tone from the sun-kissed pop of his main squeeze, Mondanile's work as Ducktails presents a more fragmented, mercurial version of the Garden State of mind. More synthetic, too, than Real Estate, Ducktails is all burbling analog synths, bedroom processing, and sunburnt soundscapes. The end effect acts as a sort of bleary aural Polaroid taken at a...
