Album Review

After a few years of producing 12" EP releases on the labels Audiomatique and Poker Flat, Trentemøller made his full-length album debut with The Last Resort (2006). The album itself is a 13-track collection of new production work, much of it more ambient and atmospheric than the Danish techno DJ/producer's prior releases. Highlights include "Always Something Better," "Moan," and "Miss You." A second disc of Trentemøller's early singles is available as part of a special edition of The Last Resort.

The Last Resort Trentmoller

This is a classic Trentmoller album. Produced with a relaxing tech style that anyone with a love for electronic music can relate to. Great for the chill weekend getaway.

The Last Resort - Trentemoller

"The Last Resort" contains haunting, intriguing sounds throughout. Many of the compositions are strictly instrumental, aside from vocal samples that show up from time to time. The opening tracks feature a grunge bass and fantastic production, the latter point carrying through to the end of the album. 'Always Something Better' and 'While the Cold Winter Waiting' were two of my favorites, the latter featuring bells, along with a combination of sampled, spliced sounds that are staccato but work extremely well within the song. Much of the album is ambient and minimalistic, especially 'The Very Last Resort', which has a very industrial feel. This was another haunting track filled with darker instrumentation, vocals, acoustic guitar, and lots of phasing between sounds. 'Chameleon' is more up-tempo, featuring a deep synth bass; 'Into the Trees' follows this pattern with similar style and presentation, with this track being the more club-friendly of the two. 'Miss You', the closing track, is soft and reflective with less percussion. The bonus tracks are an interesting addition to the album, as vocal versions of 'Always Something Better' and 'Moan' are featured and pave the way for seven new tracks listeners have not previously heard. 'Physical Fraction' takes listeners down a techno, trance road, and 'Polar Shift' follows with more of the same. 'Killer Kat' featured one of the better grooves on the album, and in my opinion was one of Trentemoller's best compositions. 'Rykketid' was also strong and closed the album well in conjunction with 'Prana'.

Denmark-based Anders Trentemøller made his debut in 1997, DJ'ing the local club circuit and occasionally performing live. After a self-imposed hiatus spanning several years, he returned with his own productions, which quickly grabbed the ear of the then red-hot Naked Music house music label. His debut EP was well received and won praise from DJs in all electronic music genres.
