Editors’ Notes
Adam Young may have started Owl City in his basement and sparked his buzz via Myspace, but he's now playing fully aboveground, with pop sensation Carly Rae Jespen joining Young for a duet on the sure-shot single "Good Time." High-powered producer Stargate is recruited to co-produce the modern pop confection "Shooting Star," while another big name, Kool Kojak, assists with "Take It All Away." The whole album has a sonically manipulated feel, with heavy compression and mechanized beats dominating every square inch. Blink-182's Mark Hoppus helps craft the harder-rocking edge of "Dementia." However, anyone expecting the balance between emo and electronica of earlier Owl City releases will be disappointed. This is a pop album. The homespun charm has been left to history as Young reaches for the pop charts, using every tool in his arsenal. In truth, it's the evolution that should be expected from someone who made his reputation with the robo-synths of "Hello Seattle" and "Fireflies." Young likely dreamed of having access to the stars, and now he's among them.
Customer Reviews
I adore Owl City, but miss the old magic Adam used to bring
Adam Young is such a talented, intelligent artist. I just hope he doesn't leave his past work behind in exchange for more mainstream sounds. Being unique is what makes you successful, not following what some of the crowd today wants to hear. Don't lose all your old fans for a couple new ones.
I'll always have an eye on Owl City, I hope it doesn't disappoint.
Why the hate?
I personally don't understand why everybody is hating on this album. I think it's great that Adam is exploring new territory and that he's co-writing. I've been an Owl City fan for years, and I am enjoying this album just as much as the others. The songs are different, but that's okay. I really enjoy them. Bombshell Blonde, Silhouette, and Embers are probably the best.
Once great turned pop.
To be brutally honest, this new album is terrible. I loved his dreamy, ethereal electronica that was characteristic of songs like "The Technicolor Phase" or "Sky Diving." His lyrics were deep in a way that was also relatable. His lyrics would bring you up when you were down and listening to him was like falling asleep and entering a sweet dream.
Not this one.
I couldn't hear any of his beautiful lyrics anymore. I just think this album lacks what made Owl City Owl City. Didn't like it.
