Album Review

On her first album, Barbra Streisand established herself as a singer who discovered or created new standards instead of one who revived or re-created old ones. She wavered from this commitment on her second album, and on her third gave in to convention completely. There was nothing wrong with her interpretations of such old favorites as "My Melancholy Baby," "Taking a Chance on Love," "As Time Goes By," or "It Had to Be You," except perhaps that they seemed a little tame for a performer of such demonstrated individuality. She was assured by going back to Harold Arlen's St. Louis Woman for "I Had Myself a True Love," using its bluesy tone for some emotional fireworks. The Third Album is another demonstration of the beauty of Barbra Streisand's voice.

An Overlooked Gem

The third album completes a bit of a trilogy with the first set of Streisand albums in that they focused on standards. The arrangements are big band, Barbra's vocals still very young sound really confident here, she knows she's the star of this show. All the standards are a bit more popular this outing, a strong track is "As Time Goes By," delivered tenderly. The oft-recorded "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered" doesn't stray too much from it's basic arrangement, the end result is a pretty, well sung version of the standard. "Never Will I Marry" is a demanding piece and Barbra delivers it effortlessly. This lp was released in 1989 along with a myriad of Streisand lp's remastered, this cd's first go-round was a bit distorted, it's second release in 1993 turned down the volume and the finished result is a much better master de-noised, so it has a "restored" feel to it. This iTunes version is the superior 1993 re-release.

Barbra Streisand's status as one of the most successful singers of her generation was remarkable not only because her popularity was achieved in the face of a dominant musical trend — rock & roll — which she did not follow, but also because she used her vocal skills as a mere stepping stone to other careers, as a stage and film actress and as a film director. Born in 1942 and raised in Brooklyn, New York, she struggled briefly as an actress and nightclub singer in New York during...
