Album Review

Although Chet Baker's recordings from late in his life varied dramatically in quality, this series of studio sessions is a high point in his career. After having his trumpet stolen, he plays beautifully with a borrowed flügelhorn throughout most of these songs with a powerful tone, especially on "Baby Breeze" and Hal Galper's intense "This Is the Thing." Baker delivers some strong vocals on the session led by pianist Bobby Scott, though Scott's huge hit "A Taste of Honey" is marred somewhat by his odd honky tonk piano in the background. This is an unusual compilation worth acquiring.

A Triumphant Return to the States!!

Chet had just returned from Europe in '64 when this was recorded and playing on a Fluegelhorn as his trumpet had been stolen while in Paris. His return to the states was a big deal as fans had not forgotten his lyrical playing and gentle voice--he had been away for 5 years. His boyish looks were fading due in part to his appetite for heroin. If you can ever find a series of records on Prestige--I own "Grovin' with, "Smokin' with" and another that all feature George Coleman-tenor, Kirk Lightsey-piano, Herman Wright-bass, Roy Brooks-drums buy them. Recorded in '66 after arrests in England and France, hospitization in Germany and finally deportation back to the US. To hear the Tad Dameron song "Bevan Beeps" will make the search worth every minute of your time. From Baby Breeze check out "Born to Be Blue" Bakers tribute to Mel Torme'. Ronnie Scott plays incredible piano.Nobody better than the ever tasteful Kenny Burrell to round out the trio for this and two others! A classic sound. Players on other tunes include Phil Urso-tenor, Frank Strozier-alto and flute, Hal Galper-piano, Mike Fleming-bass, Charlie Rice-drums. You'll like this record!! Ray K

One of Chet's Best

Love this album- Chet's voice on "Everything Depends On You", combined with the accompaniment of Bobby Scott on piano and Kenny Burrell (I believe that is Kenny Burrell) on guitar providing flawless and perfectly timed chord changes is one of the best of Chet's vocals - very jazzy/bluesy - sitting in a bar somewhere late at night. Great stuff!
