Weezer's debut proved that the '90s alt-rock boom had considerably more going for it than Nirvana and other benefactors of Seattle scene hype. Indeed, fueled by a geek-appeal that was refreshingly organic, Rivers Cuomo and company delivered one of the decade's most assured debuts here. While so much of the decade's music revolved around specious angst and cheap intellectual irony, Cuomo's songs often had an insouciant charm that seemed equally rooted in '70s arena rock and '80s new wave, yielding the infectious singles in "Buddy Holly," "Undone (The Sweater Song)," and "Say It Ain't So." The band's easy way with melodies and hooks are also showcased on the standouts "In the Garage," "Surf Wax America," and "The World Has Turned and Left Me"-filled with one of the charms generally in short supply during the era: genuine innocence.

I don't think weezer can ever top this

Back in 1994, I went through an "alternative" phase. I found myself enjoying music by the Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots (especially), Live, and some random singles here and there (like Candlebox and Collective Soul). Near the end of my phase, I heard a new song debut on a San Francisco radio station (Live 105) one August morning, and it was called "Undone/The Sweater Song". I Loved it. Immediately, I took note, and kept my eyes and ears open for more Weezer material... Next came "Buddy Holly". The song was ridiculously catchy, and it sounded nothing like "Undone" (hey...variety!) and the Spike Jonze clip for the song was definitely fun to watch. I immediately borrowed the album from one of my friends at school. I was simply amazed at how consistently good Weezer's album was; absolutely no filler tracks whatsoever - at least in my opinion. The songs that I still enjoy to this day (despite the fact that my alternative/rock phase is over) are "The World Has Turned And Left Me Here", all three of their singles ("Undone", "Buddy Holly", "Say It Ain't So"), "Holiday" (my absolute favorite song on the album) and "Only In Dreams" (what a long, yet perfect song...) I guess the reason why I wrote this review is because...to me, really good music has the ability to leap out of its respective genre and attract just about anyone with an open mind, and an open ear. I'm very much looking forward to hearing Weezer's new material; by all accounts it's more of the melodic, sing-songy material that made this album such a classic.

Oh yeah...

All right... feels good... inside.... Not to mention it sounds good to. "Say it Ain't So" is the best song on the album, one of the top ten songs of all time easily, if not greater, and in my top three favorites. Too much to say about that one song here. Take out that song, and you still have one heck of an album. Weezer is at it's best and Rivers has struggled mightily ever since to take it somewhere else. "Only In Dreams" is so long and not everyone could pull off a song of that length, but Weezer delivers. Rather than end with a vocal climax, they continue to dimish after the vocals and when there is almost nothing, poco y poco crescendo and all of a sudden we are noticing this magnificent guitar sound with the reverb and distortion bouncing around and finally it explodes to the climatic end, cascading down and down and wraps up to leave you wondering was it just a dream? So much is happening musically in that song. The lyrics are amazing. It is a great wrap-up to the album and really reminds the listener of everything they just heard with all the rest of the tracks. Other than that song... Well, every one of them is great! A lot of people say they liked "My Name is Jonas" but "The World Has Turned and Left Me Here" has the same sort of guitar sound with better lyrics and a better melody. "Surf Wax America" and "Holiday" also do a lot of dynamic works and have an unique, upbeat sound. Surprisingly, "Buddy Holly" doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the album as it the most "pop" sounding of all the songs. Lyrics are amazing and the guitar sound only enhances them. Reminds people of what it's like trying to be an adolescent in suburban America. Don't be decieved by only ten tracks, it is comfortable in length and worth more than you pay for. But if you can't get them all get 1) Say it Ain't So 2) The World Has Turned and Left Me Here 3) Only in Dreams 4) No One Else 5) Undone (the Sweater Song) can I give this album six stars?
