Editors’ Notes

A ten-hour delay didn’t mute Janis Joplin’s attack on the Woodstock stage. Having made an impression as an unknown at the 1967 Monterey Music Festival, by the time of the 1969 Woodstock Festival, Joplin was more than ready to take command of her newly formed horn-laced ensemble and deliver a set that was both bluesy and funky. Issued with a re-mastered edition of her 1969 album, I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama!, The Woodstock Experience adds an hour-long performance that includes three previously unreleased tracks: Eddie Floyd’s “Raise Your Hand,” Nick Gravenites’ “As Good As You’ve Been For This World” and Otis Redding’s “Can’t Turn You Loose.” Throw in fiery versions of Big Mama Thornton’s “Ball & Chain,’ her trademark “Piece of My Heart,” the Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody” given a major soul overhaul, and the Gershwin classic “Summertime” and you’ve got a prime look at one of the era’s premier stars.

Fantastic!

I thought I had heard (and memorized) everything Janis ever recorded. This collection provides real fans good insight to that particular time of her careeer.

Woodstock is a triumph in final release!

Janis did not like her performance but given the conditions of the event. Janis really rises to the occasion and having had this set in bootleg; I must say Janis is getting the proper love by her reps having Mr. Eddie Kramer remaster as he has done so for Hendrix as a rule. You can really hear the Kozmic blues band subtle nuances like the guitar player is using a heavy Wah Wah pedal during quite a few songs and while Janis is conducting her ceremony shamanista blues high above the music; I am impressed by the color you can hear in the different instruments and you get the raw sense that Janis is living the Physical funk a la Stax .despite the myths that she was too stoned to perform. Janis whatever the truth might be did what she always did , she summoned her best and gave her soul to the event. : )

4 stars for the album; 1 star for the bozo who selected the preview for "Ball and Chain"

"Ball and Chain" - probably the best song on the album. I don't know who decides what piece they'll put in the preview, but here's a suggestion: Why not include the part where the artist sings? And especially exclude the part where she uses profanity!!

Biography

Born: January 19, 1943 in Port Arthur, TX

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s

The greatest white female rock singer of the 1960s, Janis Joplin was also a great blues singer, making her material her own with her wailing, raspy, supercharged emotional delivery. First rising to stardom as the frontwoman for San Francisco psychedelic band Big Brother & the Holding Company, she left the group in the late '60s for a brief and uneven (though commercially successful) career as a solo artist. Although she wasn't always supplied with the best material or most sympathetic musicians,...
