Smithsonian Folkways Recordings is the nonprofit record label of the Smithsonian Institution, the national museum of the United States. We are dedicated to supporting cultural diversity and increased understanding among peoples through the documentation, preservation, and dissemination of sound. This playlist contains a collection of songs from the Louisiana musician and composer, Lead Belly. Lead Belly recorded with Folkways Records founder Moses Asch in the 1940s. Asch let Lead Belly record anything he wished, and Lead Belly kept coming back to Asch's studio when his flirtations with stardom failed. Children's music has been a Folkways priority from the inception of the label.
