This editorial does not relate to any specific issues but is meant as general background information as to why Gangway exists.

Dieses Vorwort zielt nicht auf spezielle Ausgaben ab, sondern auf den allgemeinen Hintergrund um das Entstehen dieses Magazines.

Important update: After launching #32 – our 20th anniversary issue – at the Literaturhaus Graz in June 2004, and after much consideration, I have made the decision to introduce conceptual changes to Gangway.

Since Gangway appeared as one of the first literary journals on the internet in 1996, many more have come (and some have already gone), therefore I believe that it is imperative to create a defined niche. Hence the general focus of Gangway will be shifted from bilingual Australian and/or Austrian authors to the global community of expat writers living abroad – provided they write in – or are translated into – the English or German language.

From 2004/2005, all forthcoming issues will be given a theme, and will be infrequently compiled by pro bono guest editors until further notice. Reviews, interviews, and special features also continue to appear from time to time.

Wichtige Neuerung: Nach der Jubiläumsnummer 32 – 20 Jahre Gangan – erschienen im Juni 2004 im Literaturhaus Graz, habe ich mich entschlossen, grundlegende Änderungen vorzunehmen.

Online Magazine gibt es mittlerweile viele; und sie kommen und gehen. In einer sich rasch verändernden virtuellen Welt scheint es unabdingbar, sich schärfer zu definieren. Der generelle Schwerpunkt von Gangway wird daher von zweisprachigen Australiern und Österreichern auf all jene internationalen AutorInnen verschoben, die im Ausland oder im Exil leben; vorausgesetzt, sie schreiben auf – oder sind übersetzt in – Deutsch oder Englisch.

Ab 2004/2005 werden neue Ausgaben einem Thema gewidmet sein und in unregelmäßigen Abständen von ehrenamtlichen Gastherausgebern gestaltet. Buchbesprechungen, Interviews und Specials erscheinen weiterhin von Zeit zu Zeit.

After coming from Austria in 1989 to live in Australia I wished to continue publishing contemporary literature as I had successfully done in Graz and Vienna for many years; as a consequence The Ozlit Collection was born and two volumes of the series were published in print. However, shipping hardcopies by air was extremely expensive, via sea extremely slow – and then the question of local distribution still remained.

In this situation the need for an easily accessible global media was imperative. The Internet and the World Wide Web in particular had matured just at the right time and provided an ideal platform to reach out to the world. Early 1996 I moved gangan onto the Web with a small homepage and launched this literary magazine, which had been on my mind ever since the early eighties when I had been editing "perspective", a magazine for emerging writers; and later published "ZeitSCHRIFT" in 88/89 just before I moved to Sydney. gangart is complimenting the site trilogy since 2002.

Conceptually, I remained faithful to my earlier ideas, as well as to my authors from Australia and Austria (with some guest writers from other countries such as Germany and the US): short stories, poetry, essays and experimental prose from the 'old' and the 'new world' in the German and English languages (and/or bilingual translations) as well as some visual art. Andrea Bandhauer (Sydney) joined gangway from 1998 to 2000, and from 1999, more contributing editors followed. gangan publishing's Web site offers e-books, the authors being: Marc Adrian, Reinhold Aumaier, Alexander Curtis and others, along with information about all 24 books in print.

Financially, I covered the first three years of developing and running costs myself. So far – and without funding – all contributions were royalty-free, but I feel proud that I have contributed in a unique and beneficial way to promoting Australian and Austrian creative writing overseas as well as locally, using only personal funds and the infrastructure of my graphic and web design business. Since 1999 we are receiving small grants from the Austrian government (.KUNST).

A large site – containing hundreds of pages and even thousands printed out – it has already been awarded a "Hot Site" by the Internet community. 1998's additions like a CGI-script based gangan Message Board, gangway News and other interactive pages proved popular. The site made it into the top ten of VicNet's Tilde Awards, was nominated semi-finalist in the AFR Telstra Australian Internet Awards 1999, received the 2000-2001 Golden Web Award and a honorary mention at the prestigious at-award 2001. gangway is archived in the National Library of Australia's PANDORA project.

Statistically, in its first year the Web site received 31,528 hits (details from April 1996 to April 2002 on our gangan.com info page), had 274,226 hits after three years, reached one Million in September 2000, 1,650,000 just one year later, and 2,010,563 hits as of March 2002! The vast majority of visitors are coming from Australia, Germany, Austria and the US. However, a significant number of visitors are from educational institutions around the world. The “print run” counters on each issue have only been set in April 1999 on the new server. Current stats can be viewed at our gangway.net info page.

Meinen Bedarf an einem globalen, multilingualen Medium im Verlagsbereich verdanke ich in erster Linie dem Umstand, dass ich 1989 von Wien nach Sydney umgezogen bin, und zusätzlich zur österreichischen auch australische zeitgenössische Literatur – The Ozlit Collection – verlegt habe. Das Internet und speziell das World Wide Web war für eine Weiterentwicklung über diese grosse Entfernung hinweg geradezu ideal.

Anfang 1996 war eine erste kleine Seite (zwei Dutzend Files) in Vorbereitung und eine Woche später online. Ursprünglich hatte ich nur unsere lieferbaren Bücher im Angebot, bei gangan sind Online-Bücher dazugekommen und mittlerweile arbeite ich hauptsächlich als Website Designer. Nach Meinung unserer vielen Leser liegen gut durchstrukturierte, dynamische und benützerfreundliche Seiten als Teil einer Trilogie vor, die seit 2002 noch durch gangart als dritte Tür zu Kunst und Kultur ergänzt wird.

Das 1999 völlig überarbeitete und 2001 erweiterte Literaturmagazin ist im achten Erscheinungsjahr; die erste Nummer erschien Anfang 1996 und mittlerweile sind hunderte Seiten abrufbar (tausende, auf Papier ausgedruckt), die auch am Server der Australischen Nationalbibliothek in Canberra archiviert werden. Die Herkunft der Beiträge liegt unserem Programm gemäss auf der Achse Österreich – Australien, obwohl auch immer wieder Gastautoren aus anderen Ländern vorgestellt werden. Visuell unterliegen die Seiten einer ständigen Entwicklung, die etwa jener der HTML-Code-Generationen entspricht.

Inhaltlich bin ich meiner Konzeption aus den 80ern und auch meinen Autoren treu geblieben: Experimentelle Texte, Gedichte, Aufsätze und Kurzgeschichten aus der 'alten' und 'neuen' Welt (Deutsch, Englisch, zweisprachig). Andrea Bandhauer (Sydney) war Mitherausgeberin von 1998 bis 2000, und 1999 folgten weitere MitarbeiterInnen. Obwohl wir die Autoren auffordern das Medium in Betracht zu ziehen (Hyperlinks, Flash, JavaScript etc.), scheinen die meisten Literaten nach wie vor in Papier-Dimensionen zu arbeiten.

Die Seite kann als Frames/JavaScript Version und als Noframes Version für ältere Browser geladen werden – beide Versionen bieten jeweils identischen Inhalt. gangan Nachrichtenbord, gangway News, Letters to the Editors, Feedback etc. läuft über einfache CGI scripts. Keine Plug-Ins sind notwendig: die Idee ist, ansprechende Seiten mit elegantem Code anzubieten, die mit jedem Browser auf jedem Rechner problemlos und schnell geladen werden können. gangway beteiligt sich an einer Reihe internationaler Wettbewerbe, und hat u.a. eine Auszeichnung im renommierten at-award 2001 erhalten.

Unsere Besucherzahlen steigen laufend (im ersten Jahr 31.528 Zugriffe, 274.226 Hits in den ersten drei Jahren, siehe Übersicht auf der Info-Seite von gangan.com), erreichten im September 2000 eine Million, nur ein Jahr später bereits 1.650.000 und 2.010.563 Zugriffe per Stand vom März 2002! Besucher kommen aus Australien, Deutschland, Österreich und USA, sowie auch zu einem beträchtlichen Anteil aus dem Bildungsbereich aus aller Welt. Die “Auflagenzähler” jeder Nummer sind erst im April 1999 am neuen Server gesetzt worden. Aktuelle Statistiken können auf der Info-Seite von gangway.net abgerufen werden.
