Claire Benoist/Fitness MagazineClaire Benoist/Fitness MagazineBy Juno DeMelo

The great thing about frozen treats is that unless you're a fan of brain freeze, you have to slow down and savor them. Choose the right ones and they're as guilt-free as they are delicious. That's where we come in. Working with a team of nutritionists, we found eight yummy options with 180 calories or less, minimal added sugar, and no more than six grams of saturated fat. So go ahead and indulge; these cool treats will satisfy your cravings and keep you slim.

    What Makes a Winner
Companies submitted more than 90 new frozen desserts to FITNESS. Our experts -- Anar Allidina, RD, a dietitian in private practice in Toronto; Keri Gans, RD, the author of The Small Change Diet; and Marissa Lippert, RD, the author of The Cheater's Diet -- analyzed the ingredients and nutrition facts to help us determine which ones deserved to move to the next round of judging. Those finalists were sampled in blind taste tests and voted on by dozens of staffers throughout our company.

Cadbury Double Chocolate Ice Cream Bars
Thanks to a super-thick chocolate coating and "smooth, rich chocolate ice cream," these earned perfect 10s from testers. (150 calories per bar)

Magnum Mini Almond Ice Cream Bars
The classic Magnum bar -- vanilla bean ice cream dipped in Belgian milk chocolate -- now comes in a smaller size. Staffers went nuts for the almonds, which give the shell an extra satisfying crunch. (160 calories per bar)

Skinny Cow Slimited Editions Best of Both Swirleds Ice Cream Sandwiches
Can't decide between chocolate and vanilla? Have both! Bonus: The combo contains as much calcium as a container of yogurt. (150 calories per sandwich)

    Dreyer's Mango Fruit Bars
The only dairy-free dessert of the bunch, these ice pops (sold under the Edy's name on the East Coast) deliver all the flavor of tropical fruit. (80 calories per bar)

    Talenti Simply Strawberry Gelato
The second ingredient in this dense, decadent gelato is fruit, which wowed staffers: "It tastes just like fresh strawberries and cream," one marveled. (170 calories per 1/2 cup)

Blue Bunny Sweet Freedom Fudge Ice Cream Bars
Despite their low calorie count, these no-sugar-added bars "totally satisfied my sweet tooth," a tester said. (60 calories per bar)

Ben & Jerry's Strawberry Shortcake Greek Frozen Yogurt
Shortbread chunks make this tangy treat "OMG good." Can't stop at one scoop? Opt for Banana Peanut Butter or Raspberry Fudge Chunk, which come in single-serve tubs. (180 calories per 1/2 cup)

Weight Watchers Divine Triple Chocolate Dessert Bars
Each generously sized treat combines chocolate ice cream, a fudge ribbon, and a milk chocolate coating. No wonder testers said these tasted "like a full-fat indulgence." (110 calories per bar)

If you are diabetic and miss having ice cream, this works great. I buy a bunch of bananas, peel them and freeze them. When they are frozen you break one banana in half, add a glass of milk and 3-4 ice cubes in a ninja blender. It turns out thick like a malt and has tiny ice shavings in it. You can also add fresh pineapple, berries or cherries. I know some of you would rather have ice cream, but just thought I would share this with anyone who has to watch their sugar.

Thanks, I am a diabetic also and this is very useful information.

Edy's lemonade, lime fruit bars are way too good...
      • T M 12 hours ago
I love the Edy's pineapple popsickles, they have big chunks of pineapple in them. So naturally sweet from the pineapple. yum! Edy's are darn good. Also the Blue Bell sugar free ice creams are really really good. My parents are diabetic and they got some strawberry for us, wanting us to try and see if this no-sugar low calorie ice cream was up to par. Our son just about devoured the whole thing in less than a week. *He is a skinny child, not over weight, actually UNDER weight so I didn't mind him going a little nuts over it.

Frozen broccoli is pretty good for you!
    • FrancesH  •  1 day 3 hours ago
Okay. The best ice creams are Friendly's and Blue Bells. Coming in second for portion control would be Klondike bars. Now I am hunting for Klondike Choco Tacos which I have heard are decadent. My mindset is that I would hate to die and have left some ice cream uneaten. (no, I am not obese, I eat salad for lunch, and watch all my carbs to splurge on ice cream)
      • LoriJ 1 day 1 hour ago
The Choco Tacos are great. They now come in 3 flavors; original with vanilla ice cream, peanut butter & chocolate. The chocolate is too rich for me however.
      • Eelyak 1 day 0 hours ago
Choco Tacos are very good! the can be very messy if yu don't eat them quick enough though! lol
      • FGM 22 hours ago
Choco Tacos sound yukky! I cannot imagine eating chocolate on tacos, but to each, his own. Go for it.

Bluebell no sugar added icecreams are great but also sherberts and frozen yogurts can be good and low calorie. Also low fat or fat free yogurts are good as deserts sometimes. The Bluebell no sugar added I tried was the strawberry and it made me realize how much sugar is added to ice cream and that ice creams could still taste good without so much sugar. In many ways the sugar actually covers up the flavor of the other ingredients in the ice cream. Its like 80 calories in a half cup and simply delicious. Try it.

How about avoiding the gums and fillers and eat a HUMAN size portion of all natural ice-cream???

      Just a thought!
    • Nancy  •  17 minutes ago
And how chocked full of chemicals are these treats! Blech!
    • Allie B  •  1 day 11 hours ago
They forgot "Diana's Bananas" ... I LOVE them. They are a frozen banana covered in either dark chocolate, milk chocolate, or milk chocolate with peanuts. I discovered them at Giant not too long ago and I am hooked! The banana inside is soft, so it is easy to bite into. It is refreshing, like ice cream, for when you need to cool off on a hot day. It is fantastic. I can't believe they didn't put that up here!
      • Pamela Franke 2 hours 2 minutes ago
It started out that people were posting only about low calorie ice cream. I looked up what a frozen chocolate banana is in calories. A 4 ounce banana (about 60 calories) with 1 ounce of melted semi sweet chocolate (140 calories)= about 200 calories.
      • mooo 1 hour 25 minutes ago
Grilled pineapple is super sweet naturally and is not just a good tasting science project. It is actually good for you, children. Avoid artificial sweeteners & HFCS.
      • Nancy 15 minutes ago
Not sure why anybody would waste money buying these as it's easy to melt some chocolate yourself, dip some bananas into them and freeze.

Speaking of ICE CREAM...... Breyers nice little novelties? They have printed right on the carton: Frozen Dairy desert. WTH does THAT mean?
    • rocdoc  •  12 minutes ago
For diabetics - or anyone - add some half & half to diet root beer (or diet Coke), - a scoop of sugar-free vanilla ice cream - or cool whip (or both) - and you've got a great ice cream float.
The diet soda with half & half is just like an old fashioned egg cream - for any ol time NYers out there! Yummy,
    • rocdoc  •  44 minutes ago
CLEMMY'S beats them all - NO sugar - delicious, rich ice cream.
#2 = Fudge bars - low calories, no sugar added.

Dole frozen juice bars are great. You can always make your own. Most bargan stores like Target sell molds with sticks in them. Freeze juices. Also most fruits freeze. a great low cal low sugar frozen treat is frozen grapes.

I like Popsicle sugar free. But grape are my favorite and it's an assortment with cherry and orange ones too. I would probably go through an all-grape box in one sitting if they had them.
