Vicious storms delayed play at the third round of the AT&T National at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md., and the damage was severe enough that the tournament organizers closed the event to patrons on Saturday. Officials said that safety concerns were severe enough that they feared injury to fans and volunteers from falling limbs and other problems. The final round was delayed until 1 p.m. ET, with players going off in threesomes on both tees.

Tournament officials said the storm uprooted up to 40 trees, including a 75-foot-tall beast that fell onto the 14th fairway. Branches ran along the 11th for 300 yards. Some of the cables for services such as ShotLink were damaged, which could cause communication problems down the line.

For now, a gallery of storm carnage:

"A dozen fans got a real treat there" LoL classic. May be a dumb question but...Soo no fans, but obviously from the vid there are announcers...why can't I find this tournament on TV?!?!?

What if no one came to watch? Well, there is ONE person who I wish would stay home. It is the IDIOT and his IDIOT copycats who shout out "In the hole" every time a golfer hits the ball. Most annoying shout in all of sports.

I agree. Players tee off on a 600 yard par 5. "In the hole"

My Grandparents were memebers their, before it became only corp memebers. I used to go there all the time, loved it. During the golf tournament, you always had to leave for work extra early, if you had to drive 495 toward Va or coming from Va, the far right lane was always closed to traffic because of the line of cars going to the Club. A fav childhood memory.

I didn't have to listen to the golf marshals yelling to the spectators to be quiet because they didn't have enough sense to be quiet on their own. It was good for the players and the television viewers.

Maybe they'll start a new trend.

Boy-O-Boy--If this happened at a football game, you'd have a bunch of cry babies commenting.

They need to put another $100 on the ticket prices for final two days to keep some of the trash from attending. Maybe we would finally be free of the stupid a holes yelling at the golf balls to - get in the hole! Maybe a pre attendance question - do you talk to golf balls?
    • ScottM  •  13 hours ago
What a wonderful break for the players...now they don't have to listen to some idiot yelling you dah man, go in the hole (on the tee shot of a 500yrd par 4), yah ba dabba doo, or making sounds like chew bacha from star wars. American golf fans on the course have become such low-life idiots...European golf is so much more enjoyable to watch. The fans are more courteous, and the announcers say less letting the players and the game speak for itself.

How is this news? Golf isn't even a sport, so how can they write an entire article on this non-event?

Looks like that there are more hazards on the golf course than the designer had planned.
