    America's best July 4th celebrations

Uncle Sam’s favorite holiday bursts upon the scene midweek this year, causing a bit of a problem: Should you celebrate the weekend before, the weekend after, or on Wednesday, July 4th?

Most big cities will mark the traditional date, July 4th, with landmark fireworks shows and parades, but many smaller towns are holding events before or after the actual date, with the weekend of July 6-7th lining up as a favorite.

The bottom line: Independence Day 2012 offers a prime excuse to party all week long.  Where should you go to see the biggest, boldest, most spectacular celebrations of our nation’s 236th birthday?

We asked a couple of people who know how to set the sky on fire – fireworks experts – for advice. “New York City tops the list,” says Julie Heckman, executive director of the American Pyrotechnics Association, the trade association of the U.S. fireworks industry.

Her other raves include the shows in Lake Tahoe, Ca., Washington DC and Nashville, Tenn. And, she adds, “There are so many wonderful July 4th celebrations across the country and even the smallest hometown community display can be spectacular!”

We also talked to Jim Souza, owner of Pyro Spectaculars, one of the nation’s top fireworks manufacturers.  Souza’s five-generation business has been lighting up the world’s celebrations for almost 100 years, including Olympic Games, presidential inaugurations, Super Bowls and Disney amusement parks.

“All the rockets are on the launch pad,” says Souza, who will produce 400 shows on July 4, including about half of the nation’s largest.

He agrees with Heckman that Macy’s New York show (which he produces) is the best.
“When you hear the crowd cheer, that’s the payday for people like us.”

During the 4th of July fireworks, many pets are scared, run off and are frightend to death. Yes, to death. a couple of years ago a young Shepherd dog run for hours, then finally came home and had a heart attack. Keep your pets safe. You can keep them inside, or give them a light tranquilizer before the fireworks.

Put your animals in the house before it gets dark, on the 4th.

Keeping them inside doesn't help when your neighbors set off hundreds of dollars worth of fireworks. Tranquilizers would be great IF they worked. My vet prescribed 2 for our Silky - they might as well have been Cheerios. They did absolutely nothing. I take our dog for a long ride in the car on the 4th.

Forget the other places, I love the fireworks at Fort Bragg! They the band plays, shoot cannons, and then the fireworks. Gotta love it!

Drought, people without work, the fear of our failing economy, bad political feuds, disasters and homeless people, smaller fireworks, less waste and more prayers would be just as good.

If it's like many major cities that have a corporate name attached (like Macy's??), probably sponsored and paid for by that corporation.

we were invited last year tothe fire works in Fullerton--the whole playing field was full of people--it was a delightful night surrounded by our friends and in the midst of their neighbors--I later found out from my cousin that this tradition has been going on for decades and she and her family attended it regularly when they lived in the area---so Hurray for the fullerton Fire Department and Hail the Red-White and Blue---traditions are what keep us all together -and pull us through the Hard times-----

How about a very small town in Potter County PA called Galeton! With a population of only about 1200, because this little town has the best fireworks display in the area, it grows to over 10,000 people for the day. Of course New York is going to have the best, they can afford it. Galeton's fireworks come from donations and fundraisers.

I love small town celebrations in Pennsylvania. I grew up in western PA. Now I live right smack in the center of the state. If you ever feel like seeing a great fireworks display without driving a long way into a city, State College has amazing fireworks set to music and an all-day celebration every 4th.

State College is a nice area!

When I was a kid in the 70's, Schlitz put on the best fireworks show hands down. It was on the lakefront and everyone from 100 miles came to see. It usually lasted over 1 hr, and the fireworks highlighting over Lake Michigan was priceless. I will always remember those 4th of July celebrations. Fabulous.

The will be a fly over of 4 F16 jets with their afterburners blazing as they fly over the crowd in Madison. Preceeding that there will be 2 separate special precision army parachute drops in the park using special pyrotetnics as the decend.

They never mentioned Indianapolis, where fireworks are launched from one of the towers downtown. San Antonio, sadly, does this for New Year's Eve but not for Independence Day.

Well these are the pro shows. Back in the day's when our city was more "lenient" my neighbors and I put on a pretty darned good amateur show with all the legal and illegal stuff mainly bought on the reservations etc. Still some good ones out there if you know where to go.

For years, I think that Lake Wylie, SC, Charlotte, NC, Gastonia, NC, and Ashville, NC had the greatest fireworks without all the traffic to deal with! It was really nice! Beautiful sight in the Carolinas!
      • Shaun 22 hours ago
I live in Gastonia and our show is ok, but the Lillington NC fireworks show is amazing. People from Raleigh and other surrounding areas forsake the big city for their show.

Fair warning to those going to DC to see the fireworks on the Fourth. Go very early to get your spot. The police shut down roads leading into DC before the fireworks happen so the only way if you go too late that you're going to get to see the fireworks is metro-ing in or looking up from your car during the inevitable traffic jam and seeing them from afar.

While I would love to see the fireworks in DC, or New York, but our little town of 12,000 puts on one heck of a show at the local golf course. We are the county seat, and many people travel to see our "tiny" show. It's fantastic, can be viewed in various places around town, and we are never disappointed. However this year, we are meeting friends at Navy Pier in Chicago for the show. Heard it's great, have a hotel on the Pier, so we are planning fun, fun, fun!

Still not as big as all the fireworks at the Lake front in Milwaukee maybe bigger then the Big Bang to kick off Summerfest (slightly or maybe not) but the 3rd of July Fireworks show at the lake front is bigger then any I've seen anywhere in the US.
