Weird laws to know before you travel

You risk hefty fines – even jail time! – if you accidentally break one of these

A ban on wearing high heels isn't enforced in Carmel, Calif. But not so Athens, Greece (Stockbyte)

You better bite your tongue when you visit Middleboro, Mass. Last week, residents voted in a town meeting to impose a $20 fine on any publicly uttered swear words.

While this may catch some travelers to the community by surprise, it’s not the only place the uttering of curse words is illegal. Here are some of the wackiest local laws that visitors should be aware of before venturing out.

    1. Be careful what you wear

Laws governing clothing are common and should always be checked before traveling abroad. Qatar forbids indecent or revealing clothes, defined as “not covering shoulders and knees, tight or transparent clothes.” The Vatican City requires shoulder coverings and skirts or shorts to the knee in order to enter museums and churches. And, Castellammare di Stabia, south of Naples, has outlawed mini-skirts, low-cut jeans and too much cleavage, with violators risking a 300-euro fine.

Thailand has a law demanding that you wear underwear at all times – also a good idea in general.

In Italy, where foreign beach-goers can offend the local sensibility, laws often require cover-ups over swimsuits. In Lerici, on the Italian Riviera, you’re not allowed to walk the streets in just a swimsuit. That’s also true on the island of Capri, which has gone further to protect the serenity of the vacation spot by banning noisy shoes, such as clogs or wooden-soled sandals.

    2. The shoes on your feet

Carmel, Ca., where Clint Eastwood was mayor, has a famous historic ban on woman wearing high heels. Though the law isn’t enforced, tourists can purchase a commemorative permit allowing them to wear the shoes.

But, you won’t get away with that in the historic sites around Greece. After many of the country’s landmarks, like the Acropolis, were damaged in recent years by visitors, the government banned people from wearing high heels at the ancient locations.

Urban legend also has it that the city of Blythe, Calif., bans people from wearing cowboy boots unless they own at least two cows. However, even the city manager of Blythe has never heard of that rule being enforced, so you’re probably safe in those boots.

    3. Pull up your pants

While fashions change, one thing hasn’t. People wearing their pants sagged below the top of their boxers has had public officials up in arms for years. Five metro cities around Atlanta have banned saggy pants, skirts and shorts – specifically those more than three inches below the wearer’s hips. In Forest Park, Ga., violators can even face a $1,000 fine.

Montgomery County in Alabama levies a $100 fine against juveniles and $150 fine against adults with the slogan: “Raise your pants, raise your image.”

Delcambre, La., was the first town to make it a crime to “show your underwear in public.” There you can face six months in jail for a violation.

Saw a guy the other day - his pants weren't just low on his hips. They were below his butt. He had on boxer shorts and walked down the street holding his pants around his thighs. I had to laugh - he looked so ridiculous!

The nicest thing I could say about him was that from a distance his boxers and his shirt were color coordinated!

I used to live in Carmel, CA and the only reason they passed this stupid law was because of stupid lawsuits. There are a lot of cobblestone walkways - not the main sidewalks - and fashion divas were suing the city because they would twist their ankles on them. This gives the city an out since apparently some ladies will not use their common sense and walk a different way or take their high heels off.

yea sounds like something some fluzzy would do - on purpose at that ... wow... had no idea... wow... i bet they won the lawsuits too- or settled out of court for gobs of money

They got money. It started when the woman bought hot coffee at a McDonald's, spilled it on herself and sued and won because it was hot. Yeah USA

I wish they would pass the law here and fine them and also give them 6 months for wearing their pants below their waist band on their shorts wearing them below their butt. That is so ridiculous and just looks plain nasty, not only the males but the females as well.

I agree. Anytime I see kids walking around with their pants falling down I want to tell them to pull it up or just walk over and pull it down. They are such slobs. Why do they think it is cool to look at someone's backside and their boxers? The worst though is when females do it.... eesh. I grew up in the 80's and 90's where we had the huge baggy pants though I did not wear them. I can understand being in fashion, but pull your damn pants up! Kids like that idiot Justin Bieber look like total slobs.

Couple of my favorites (not listed):

It is illegal in Michigan to hitch a crocodile to a fire hydrant.

In Baltimore, it's illegal to take a lion to the movies.

You figure at least one person did both of these things to get a law passed against it...or the legislatures were packed with crazy people (more so than usual) the years these goofy ordinances were enacted.

Why for heaven's sake would anyone wear heels to go sight seeing??
    • Teresa  •  4 days ago
If you've ever been to Europe, you know that they are just a little more formal than we are in general there. You just don't see the flip-flops and Daisy Dukes everywhere there like you do here. And when you're in someone else's country, obey their laws. DUH!

I know this article was pointing the finger at some pretty trivial "offenses" in order to get a laugh, but seriously, if you travel abroad it is good to acquaint yourself with the local laws. You may be an American with all sorts of rights here in the country, but in Qatar, or Singapore you're just another foreign tourist and your "American" rights stop at the border.

Always a shame when places have to enact laws to get people to be civil and polite.

"Thailand has a law demanding that you wear underwear at all time." I guess that is why we don't see Brittany, Paris or Lindsay in Thailand too much.

Yay for bans on sagging pants. I am so tired of seeing peoples boxers.
    • Dave  •  4 days ago
Duh, why would you be wearing high heels while climbing around ancient ruins all day. Sounds pretty stupid.
    • daystar  •  Birmingham, Alabama  •  3 days ago
I understand certain shoes not being allowed because of damage to certain ancient sites, and I understand revealing clothing not being allowed in some areas, this is not just disrepectful to others but you disrespect yourself more by dressing this way in public.

"Of course, there are other reasons not to shoot the cactus. In 1982, a man in southern Arizona shot so many holes in the trunk of a giant 28-foot cactus that it fell on him and killed him."

Let's just say it was a prickly, well deserved, fate.

At the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas, men are to remove caps before entering the compound.

A woman, (or man), who weighs 100 lbs, in stiletto heels @ 1/4 inch base, will exert pressure upon a floor of 400 pounds per square inch with each step.
That is enough to indent some wood or vinyl composition flooring.

In business, I was once threathened with a law suit for defective materials.
Women in heels ruined a floor.
