The VanguardFriday 9th May
Daina Demillo
With The Greeks + Bow Campbell (Front End Loader) & Jeremy Craib (Bluejuice)

Brace yourself for a power-packed show where Demillo will be performing songs from the album 'Premiere' - Think a Quentin Tarantino meets James Bond film soundtrack.

Songs are inspired by unrequited love, revenge, film noir, the human psyche, Sacher-Masoch and influenced by electronica, jazz, surf rock and the 1930s-1960s.

A petite singer with a big powerful voice that is reminiscent of an era where divas like Shirley Bassey and Ella Fitzgerald reigned, Daina Demillo is nevertheless a visionary artist and uses her traditional jazz training to create a contemporary cinematic sound experience.

The Karate Kid
(1984)

Newly arrived in California from New Jersey, teenager Daniel (Ralph Macchio) almost immediately runs afoul of karate-trained high school bullies. He is rescued by Japanese janitor Miyagi (Noriyuki "Pat" Morita), who agrees to teach Daniel how to harness karate for good instead of brutality. The film culminates in a championship karate bout, pitting Daniel against his sworn enemy Johnny (William Zabka) -- the cruel and thuggish boyfriend of Ali (Elisabeth Shue), with whom Daniel has fallen in love (and vice versa).

Entry is $5, and as usual the popcorn is complimentary.
We'll also have our bar, pizza and cocktail menus available on the night.
Shorts and clips from 7pm, Feature starts at 8pm.

Roger Vs The Man
With The Gang Of Brothers + Aaron Lyon

Brainchild of lead-singer, guitarist, composer and producer Roger Lock, Roger Vs. The Man is renowned for its intricately powerful synthesis of rock, jazz and classical elements. The band is proud to call the stage 'home'. Their live energy is unstoppably addictive, the message loud and clear: play with fire, salute your beliefs.
The band's debut album 'Black Pearl' is an opus that features tracks from the politically charged to the velvety romantic. Scored for an ensemble of mini-orchestral proportions, it credits some of Sydney's best orchestral, jazz and underground session players, all high on character and pumped on technique. United under one banner, Roger Vs. The Man delivers an epic live show.

The VanguardFriday 16th May
Mustered Courage
With Green Mohair Suits

Mixing old-school bluegrass with modern roots music, Mustered Courage rose to the top of Australia's folk scene in 2011, thanks to a self-titled debut album that won the band a string of warm reviews, plenty of radio support and a trophy at the 2012 Music Oz Awards.

After playing every major Australian festival in 2012, these down-home pickers are in the middle of their biggest year to date- - a year that recently saw the release of their second album, Powerlines. Produced by Aria Award-winning producer Jimi Maroudas (The Living End, Eskimo Joe, Kimbra), 'Powerlines' finds the band fine-tuning a diverse sound that one publication recently described as "the link between Bill Monroe and Mumford & Sons.

Like the Old Crow Medicine Show and the Avett Brothers, Mustered Courage breathes new life into the crusty old bluegrass scene. Bluegrass used to be a kind of sit down scene, not anymore!

The VanguardSunday 18th May
Scott Matthew
With Tom Lee-Richards

He has described himself as a "quiet noise-maker" with a passion for ballads. He is most familiar to audiences for his incredible voice and poignant song writing. Receiving attention for his earlier Sydney collective Elva Snow and from John Cameron Mitchell's critically acclaimed film Short Bus, Matthew has since been selling out shows all over Europe and remains true to his self proclaimed title. Whoever has experienced Matthew and his wonderful musicians live on stage are oddly touched. His emotional investment in his music is so deep and vast. His presence intensifies the charm and immediacy of his work whilst still being able to give an ease to the evening with two or three words between his songs.

The VanguardFriday 23rd May
Things Of Stone And Wood
With Carus Thompson

Twenty-five years ago a rag-tag bunch of folkies got together and formed a band called Things of Stone & Wood that went on to define Melbourne in the early 90s.
Off the back of their top 10 single 'Happy Birthday Helen', the band achieved national success, international tours, a gold album 'The Yearning' and even a Late Show parody, kicking off a career that would place them as one of Australia's most loved Folk-Rock bands.
Described as "Melbourne's most inspired and inspiring acoustic band" (Michael Dwyer), their imaginative use of organic instruments set off an acoustic/folk movement that paved the way for the likes of John Butler, The Waifs and Angus & Julia Stone.
Their live show has always been full of energy and passion and whilst they've won many an industry award, including an ARIA and APRA Songwriter of the Year, it's on stage that demonstrates why they're so loved.
To celebrate their 25th anniversary, Things of Stone and Wood are touring once again in their original lineup, for the first time since 1997 for a limited run of special shows, playing favorites from across their multi-decade career.

Established in 2005 by Dramatic Soprano and Artistic Director, Irene Sarrinikolaou, this event exemplifies the passion, verve and aesthetic of the company… ANGELVOICES is committed to producing beautiful and evocative performances designed to delight and inspire.
