It's impossible to overstate the importance of the Queens trio Run-DMC, the first rap group to really crash through to the mainstream. They changed the game, taking hip-hop from a curious New York subculture that had been skeptically labeled a passing fad and introducing it to the world. They were the first rap act to top the charts, go platinum, get on MTV, sell out arenas, and tour internationally. Between 1984 and 1988, Run-DMC were absolutely unstoppable, racking up hit after hit and influencing every other act that came after them. They were still recording and touring when Jam Master Jay was shot to death in 2002. If you're too young to remember them, or for some reason just never got into them at the time, this compilation features some of their biggest and best-loved singles (a Run-D.M.C. for Dummies, if you will). All of these songs are total classics and will give you an introductory taste of their Adidas-clad greatness.
