Album Review
Portugese-Canadian songstress Nelly Furtado's 2000 debut album, Whoa, Nelly!, hit like a bolt out of the blue, its single "I'm Like a Bird" becoming a runaway smash. On the follow-up, Folklore, she asserts her staying power straight out of the gate; the first song finds her repeatedly declaring that she's not just a "One-Trick Pony." Where Whoa, Nelly! mixed pop, rock, and R&B production techniques, its successor goes further. The aforementioned opening track, for example, features accompaniment by renowned new music ensemble the Kronos Quartet, while "Forca" finds Furtado's celebratory exultation framed by the banjo arpeggios of Béla Fleck. The album closes on the quiet, introspective "Childhood Dreams," which slowly builds up moody, atmospheric layers of texture that neatly sign off on Furtado's bid for artistic longevity., Rovi

One of my favorites
I bought this CD when it was released and it remains one of my favorites. It didn't have as much folk influence as I assumed from the title and album art. (Sidenote: Nelly's first pregnancy coincided with much of the recording of this album, but don't worry, it didn't soften her up too much.) One-Trick Pony: The single you've probably heard. Upbeat pop with a slightly ethnic guitar hook. Powerless: Another single you've probably heard. Nice, steady beat. Explode: Contains a rap. Relives dysfunctional high school days. Try: Must-have ballad. It's stunning. Fresh Off The Boat: I didn't really care for this one. It's a little dancey. Forca: Laidback pop song, sounds a little like her Portugeuse heritage. Not particularly a favorite of mine tho. The Grass Is Green: Similar to 'I'm Like A Bird'. Happy-go-lucky pop. Picture Perfect: Just another pop song, a little slow. Saturdays: Stripped down acoustic about her childhood; catchy. Build You Up: Nice, intense song; my second favorite song on this album. Beautiful. Island of Wonders: Doesn't do much for me. Childhood Dreams: Ballad to her baby boy; nice beat to it but not one of the best songs on the album.
Pretty Good...
I have to say, this wasn't what i really expected. I got this album thinking it would almost be just like Whoa Nelly but it wasn't at all. I remember hearing Try on the radio and thinking "who is this girl?" and as soon as i heard it was Nelly, i knew this was an album worth getting. I was taken aback in a good way. She seemed to have matured in music styling, but also her voice seems different to me too. She goes a little higher than she usually does on this album. And she uses a lot more acoustic and some classical roots deep in the album to make it work. I also saw that this year her new album, "Loose" will be coming into the spotlight. I cannot wait to see if Nelly has changed on this album as well. Overall, i give it a four. xxx, ~~m.~~
.....
Yep you saw those dots. I'm speechless. The album is a huge change from her debut, but don't think that's bad. A a matter of fact I think this album had an even bigger effect on me than her first. "Picture Perfect" is in the top 5 of my favorite songs ever. Nelly just keeps impressing me and i'm a bit surprised to notice this album didn't get as much recognition as her 1st album did. Although with her third album coming out in March/April next year(06) I think I can be assured an absolutely breathtaking experience. And considering how her 2nd one was such a change from her 1st, I wouldn't be surprised if this third album is something completely new as well. Whoa Nelly! =P
