Editors’ Notes

One of the most impressive debut albums of the new millennium, 2000’s Whoa, Nelly! effortlessly transcended musical genres as it introduced an artist of exceptional promise. Nelly Furtado makes it all look easy, pouring sophisticated street poetry into a savory stew of folk, hip-hop, Latin and pop influences with a confidence that belies her 21 years. Challenging expectations on track after track, she saunters through arrangements blending gentle acoustic guitar, rippling percussion and steamy urban beats with a brash and winning flair. Whether her supple vocals convey waif-like dreaminess or inviting sensuality, she avoids diva-like poses in favor of an earthy, open-hearted persona. The tunes flow seamlessly from start to finish, with highlights including the string-draped “Hey, Man,” the bossa nova-driven “Legend” and the brass-accented “Baby Girl”.” Those with a taste for melodic pop will find “Well, Well” and “I’m Like A Bird” irresistible, and Furtado’s Portuguese heritage is invoked in the passionate fado ballad “Scared Of You.” Amidst all these spacey pastiches and playful sonic maneuvers, the clear-eyed intelligence and genuine warmth of this exceptional singer/songwriter shines consistently through. Whoa, Nelly! is the work of an unstoppable talent.

Customer Reviews

Nelly Furtado you wow me! WOW! WHOA NELLY!!

I wish that there was more then 5 stars! I love this album! I really like " I'm Like A Bird", "Turn off the Light", and "S**t On the Radio" they're all really good songs but those are my favorites! I love how she shows off her different personalities into her songs. Some of them are just so different from each other and it shows that she is a versitile person. I think that this is a great album to buy and everyone should buy it! WHOA NELLY! YOU WOW ME!

An album that stands alone!

As soon as the first note comes on with the sweet violin tune, you know you are listening to something magical. "Hey, Man!" churns out an infectious jam and sets the pace for whats to come. Using influences ranging from Latin salsa to hip-hop beats, she blends organic instruments with samples and electronic programming. With her lyrics delving into confessional and confrontational, it never ceases to wrap you up and enchant your ears off. An exceptional album from a talented musician!

Nelly Furtado B.T. (Before Timbaland)

This is the Furtado I remember! I consider this her best album, when she was original and not "Promiscuous". Get the whole CD! It's all wonderful!

When Nelly Furtado appeared with her neo-hippie, multiculti debut, Whoa, Nelly!, in 2001, a dance-diva makeover seemed like an impossibility, but the singer/songwriter revived and sustained her career with the sexually charged Loose in 2006, in the process consolidating her position as one of the most unpredictable artists of her decade. Furtado always proudly displayed her Portuguese heritage, a distinction that separated her from legions of emerging female singer/songwriters in the early days of...
