Handel-Messiah

Wow!!! I'm not normally a classical music fan but this really makes the heart sing. It is beautiful, healing, empowering and an overall amazing experience.

RUSHING

This Messiah rushes as fast as well, I dunno. The choir is great, and the accompiniment is also spectacular, but the tempo rushes like there's a bee chasing you. Great overall though. A definete buy for messiah lovers.

heavy-handed and bombastic

Although I am generally a fan of Solti, his version of Messiah sounds too heavy-handed and bombastic for my taste. The diction in "For unto us ... " sounds contrived and annoying; it's almost unlistenable. te Kenawa is miscast as her voice doesn't have speed and the lightness to keep up with Solti's sometimes too brisk pace. In some parts, Solti just barrels on and certain nuances are lost in the bigness of the chorus. If you like the big sounding Messiah, I prefer Marriner's Decca or Adrew Davis' EMI recordings. Shaw's version is also very good, although it is not without its flaws.
