iTunes Editors’ Notes

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke delivers a brilliantly colored robotic carnival with his latest extracurricular endeavor, Atoms for Peace. Joined by a cadre of collaborators who supported his 2008 solo project—Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, Brazilian percussionist Mauro Refosco, and drummer Joey Waronker—Yorke first led the group on an unstructured jam session. Then he spliced, manipulated, and reconstructed the recordings with the help of longtime Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich. The psychedelic result is Amok: a set of funky, doctoral-level laptop rock that groove as hard as anything Yorke has ever made.

Customer Reviews

Temper expectations and you will enjoy this record.

First of all, you should know this isn't Radiohead. This isn't even Thom Yorke's solo project (ahem, The Eraser) anymore. If there's one thing Atoms for Peace did perfect on this record, they gave themselves a clear identity. Flea's baselines and Nigel Godrich's always stellar work was just what was needed to transform Yorke's music; his previous effort The Eraser was good but half-empty. This album never feels that way. There were many "projects" last year by famous artists who came together to form a "supergroup". We're just getting into 2013, and I'm pretty sure Atoms for Peace will be my favorite project of the year already. Pick it up now.

Good Stuff

And there's really nothing else quite like it. This record is in that zone between electronica and alternative, and it's pretty experimental, but it's more to the alternative side of things than say Beck Hansen, Mum, Gram Terry, Broken Social Scene, or some of those German or Icelandic people. It's not layered with a zillion tracks with wild new sounds popping out of the mix like that stuff, in fact in that way it's kinda simple, almost as if it keeps to the 4 member 'band' genre, when it doen't need to. And at times it's really sort of grungy lo fi simple.

Where the record shines though I think is in the unique chord progessions and bass lines....this is good stuff. And the vocals and backing vocals are cool.

Overall, it works, and there will probably be a bunch of imitators.
