iTunes Review

Years after becoming soul music’s most influential elder, Mary J. Blige released Growing Pains, an affirmation of female empowerment and self-forgiveness directed not towards herself, but to the millions of women who look up to her. A 15-year veteran of the music business, Blige has enough personal and professional experience behind her to speak with authority and conviction on relationships in a way that few other female singers can. On “Till the Morning,” “What Is Love,” “Talk To Me,” and “If You Love Me,” Blige outlines relationships in which she demands compassion, vulnerability, and unconditional support from her partner. The dancing-on-air “Just Fine” and the fist-shaking “Work That” contain the strongest messages of Blige’s career, and her strongest musical statements since “Family Affair.” Combining authentically positive content with more rap swagger than she’s had in years, The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul hasn’t sounded this fresh since her 1992 debut. The music world has never needed her more, and at age 36, Blige has never been more self-assured of her place within it.

Mary's 'Growing Pains' is Sexy and Refreshing

There's nothing like being invited into a beautiful home and being asked to stay awhile. While you're getting cozy your host entertains you with fabulous stories from their adventures. And the time passes by like water. That's how I viewed Mary J. Blige's new album, Growing Pains. If the Breakthrough was our invitation to the Palace of all that Mary is as she grows, Growing Pains is like finally arriving and being warmly welcomed and thoroughly understood. Listen to the tone of the album. You genuinely feel fresh petals of this artist opening and revealing some of the most intimate parts of her talent. She approaches you intimately in voice and lyrics. The production is wonderful. savvy and full of sexy. This album is simple but satisfying to your musical palate. The lady has already invited you with "The Breakthrough"...now allow her to relate to you and touch you with her talent in 'Growing Pains'

MUST HAVE!! BeSt AlBuM Of HeR CaReEr

This has got to be the best album of 2007!! Now I've said that before for a few other albums. But this is sincere. I'm surprised that Mary was able to make an album better than 'The Breakthrough.' This album has definitely exceeded my expectations for it. Let me say that Mary J. Blige is one of my favorite artist of all time. I've been a fan of hers since 'What's the 411' days when I was in diapers lol, which is why I was dissapointed that it took 'The Breakthrough' for the whole world to take notice of this powerhouse. I think it is absolutely amazing that she is able to CONTINUALLY reinvent herself. This album is so very grown and sexy, definitely a must-have in every R&B collection. This is an album filled with positive and confident feel good tracks about love and self worth. If you need to hear some songs to be convinced, DONWLOAD: JUST FINE, GROWN WOMAN, FEEL LIKE A WOMAN, AND ROSES (MY FAVORITE!!). Hopefully this album lives up to the success of 'The Breakthrough.'

MASTERPIECE

Mary IS BACK. Every song is worth listening to and the more she grows her fans appreciate her natural growth even more. She steps outside of the box with her song "Just Fine" and give you an ear and a connection with "Come to Me (Peace)". Billboard stated that she is slated to sell at or more up to 600k but she deserves more than enough love. A true work of art. Keep growing Queen.-Dyanna P, Staten Island, NY

Biography

Born: January 11, 1971 in New York, NY

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

When her debut album, What's the 411?, hit the street in 1992, critics and fans alike were floored by its powerful combination of modern R&B with an edgy rap sound that glanced off of the pain and grit of Mary J. Blige's Yonkers, New York childhood. Called alternately the new Chaka Khan or new Aretha Franklin, Blige had little in common stylistically with either of those artists, but like them, she helped adorn soul music with new textures and flavors that inspired a whole generation of musicians....
