Editors’ Notes

Lights overflows with pop that’s as infectious as it is intelligent. But this wasn’t the British chanteuse’s first foray into songwriting — prior to recording her own songs, Goulding had smithed tunes of the teenaged Brit-pop flavor for Diana Vickers and Gabriella Cilmi. Rather than extract from the same well of inspiration, Lights cleverly wafts between indie-folk and electro-pop. The title-track introduces the album with pleasantly soft beats pulsing under her plumed and airy inflections. This is nicely contrasted against a driving rhythm in the chorus and some razor-honed hooks in the melody. The rich organic resonance of a wooden acoustic guitar changes the tone on the following “Guns and Horses” while keeping Goulding’s sprightly energy intact. Goulding’s vocal presence throughout balances salience with restraint, especially on “Starry Eyed,” a standout tune that blends helium-infused balladry with tasteful Euro-dance. Conversely, “Under The Sheets” forgoes obvious hooks for less predictable arrangements and melodic detours while maintaining melodies that are impossible to forget.

A Vocal, Lyrical, and Musical Princess from the UK

Ellie Goulding's album has been out for quite some time in the UK and has been holding a firm spot in the top albums since it was released over a year ago. The album has since seen a deluxe version release named 'Bright Lights'.

Ellie's voice has an ethereal and honest quality to it and is so refreshing in the age of auto-tune. But Ellie is by no means a vocal instrument that just sings what is put in front of her like many artists today. In fact, she wrote or co-wrote lyrics for all of her songs (obvious exception here being Your Song' by Sir Elton John)!

This, of course, could be a very unimportant thing or even a bad thing -- Mariah Carey has taken on a lot of her song writing as of late and we see how that's gone -- but the lyrics are powerful and honest (much like her voice). The tracks 'This Love (Will Be Your Downfall)'; 'Under the Sheets' and 'Guns and Horses' deal with some complex feelings and relationships.

Now, as a singer-songwriter Ellie could easily have gone down the organic, acoustic route and done splendidly, but instead she chose to collaborate with Starsmith (primarily), Biffco, Fraser T Smith, and Frankmusik who tend to edge on the electronic side of pop. This could have gone very wrong, but somehow these producers managed to elegantly capture Ellie's messages and translate them into masterpieces.

The American version includes most of the good tracks (painfully missing is 'Human' and 'Home' from Bright Lights and 'I Wish I Stayed') and is something I would recommend for truly anyone -- no matter if you're a fan of Adele, Lady Gaga, or Bruno Mars, this album is difficult not to like.

I'm very excited for Ellie's future endeavors and hope she does well here in the States!

Your Biggest Gift!

I'm so glad "Lights" is available in America!!!
This woman is so talented and there are so many incredible songs on this album. I'd list the whole album as favorites. How do you pick stand outs when they're all stand outs? But I do have strong affection for The Writer, Guns and Horses, Lights, Your Biggest Mistake, Every Time You Go, and of course, Starry Eyed. Get this! She's a wonderful singer-songwriter. Yay, Ellie!

FINALLY, a US RELEASE!

Amazing. I've been a fan for over a year now and have 3 releases from the UK, please please please buy the whole album and not just a few songs. Her live version of Starry Eyed alone is worth the $7.99! Every track is amazing and Ellie's breathy vocals are nothing short of beautiful. If you find yourself hooked on this album go ahead and get yourself a copy of BRIGHT LIGHTS, a UK release with a few extra songs (including HUMAN, HOME, LITTLE DREAMS).
