iTunes Review

John Coltrane’s discography includes a number of landmark recordings including this 1960 classic. The standout here is the title cut, a radical version of a Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II song from their Broadway musical, The Sound of Music. Drummer Elvin Jones, pianist McCoy Tyner, and bassist Steve Davis contribute mightily here and throughout the album. The quartet’s — and especially Coltrane’s — sound hints at the spiritually-infused music the great saxophonist would later play and which would reach its apogee on 1964’s A Love Supreme. Trane was at a turning point in his creative development on Things. He was exploring various modes and a broadened timbral palette, but he could still bring great sensitivity to a standard like Cole Porter’s “Every Time We Say Goodbye.” And Coltrane knew when to tweak a standard as well: the group’s fresh take on the old warhorse, “Summertime,” makes the listener rethink the tune too.

Album Only doesn't mean you don't get them

Before this dogpile gets any worse, I'd like to step in and point out that if you pay $9.99 for this album, you do indeed get "My Favorite Things" and "Summertime." The "Album Only" tag just means that, since the tracks are over ten minutes, you can't buy them individually for 99 cents. Whether this is a good deal or a rip off is your call, but in this particular case the music is worth a lot more than ten dollars, so you can't go wrong.

"ITUNES MURDERS JAZZ"

This lp is available in it's entirety at amazon.com for $10.99. The original thirteen minute masterpiece that is the title cut - not the two truncated cuts found here - as well as the other very significant track - Summertime - are found at amazon and well worth the additional buck, plus shipping, which there are ways to avoid. Too bad itunes doesn't recognize the value of great art. Is this indicative of the direction that Apple is going in? I hope not. You shouldn't forget, or turn your back on, those customers who brought you to where you are now.

Jiving

My favorite Things is a must for all jazz lovers i just couldn't seem to get the melody out of my head. Any day with Coltrane is a good day.

Biography

Born: September 23, 1926 in Hamlet, NC

Genre: Jazz

Years Active: '40s, '50s, '60s

Despite a relatively brief career (he first came to notice as a sideman at age 29 in 1955, formally launched a solo career at 33 in 1960, and was dead at 40 in 1967), saxophonist John Coltrane was among the most important, and most controversial, figures in jazz. It seems amazing that his period of greatest activity was so short, not only because he recorded prolifically, but also because, taking advantage of his fame, the record companies that recorded him as a sideman in the 1950s frequently reissued...
