Editors’ Notes
Grant McLennan’s fatal heart attack in 2006 ended the Go-Betweens reunion and the friendly songwriting competition with fellow Go-Between Robert Forster. Before his unexpected death, McLennan and Forster assembled brief collections of their solo work that gives just enough evidence of their intelligent pop craftsmanship to encourage further research. True to their differing natures. McLennan assembled his chronologically, while Forster opted purely for flow. Of the two songwriters, McLennan was the natural tunesmith, a nuts-n-bolts, straight to the point and hook man, with songs crafted to their barest essentials. His “The Dark Side of Town” uses a delicate bed of guitars and keyboards to evoke an airy, cool evening of lost romance. “Haven’t I Been A Fool” is both self-deprecating and soundly confident. “Surround Me” shimmers with harmonies masking the lyrical unrest lurking just below the surface. “Malibu 69” simply haunts. McLennan was a songwriter of rare magnitude and worthy of greater contemplation.
Customer Reviews
Brilliance!
A great selection of the late McLennan's solo work full of catchy tunes and thoughtful lyrics. More personal (in my 'umble opinion) than his work in The Go-Betweens, this selection gives you a glimpse into his solo work that will leave you wanting more. Several of these songs were on many a "you must listen to this" mix tape I would pass out to friends. Nice intro to an artist who's sadly no longer with us. The incomparable Syd Straw sings background vocals on tracks 2, 10, 13, 17 & 18.
The best of his post Go-Betweens material
This collection shows the brilliance and strength of song writing of former Go-Between - Grant McLennan. This cd is filled with excellent grown up folk pop, with rich imagery and great melodies. Grant produced four wonderful albums during the period of 1991-1997 and this record gathers the strongest songs into one very solid compilation. Grant was one of the co-founders of the critically acclaimed Go-Betweens. The were together from 1979 to 1990, when they sadly disbanded. Most people will never take a chance to hear this amazing artist. One of the saddest days of my life, was when I found out he had passed away. I highly recommend that you give this collection a chance, you will be happily rewarded.
The great Grant McLennan
Such a talent, gone too soon from this world! Horsebreaker Star is one of THE best albums of the 90's, perhaps of all time. When the shrill rantings of Pro-Tools-aided voices rake in millions for the greedy music industry that loves the status quo it is truly sad that true artists like him are never given their full due. God speed, Grant, and thanks for the songs.
