Editors’ Notes

For his second full-length, Unorthodox Jukebox, the multifaceted entertainer eschews trends. He follows his unique inner voice on the early hits—which double as the album’s leadoff tracks—“Young Girls” and “Locked Out of Heaven.” Mars showcases his impressive musical range, powerful vocal chops, and innate pop sensibilities throughout, with highlights including a boogie-funk sparkler (“Treasure”), a sorrowful piano ballad (“When I Was Your Man”), a reggae/dub dazzler (“Show Me”), and a doo-wop-inflected burner (“If I Knew”).

THIS UNORTHODOX JUKEBOX ROCKS!

In only two short years, Bruno Mars has already proven himself as one of the most genuinely talented singer/songwriters in the industry today. With his rich, raspy voice and insanely catchy lyrics, it's no wonder why he's become as popular as he is today. And much like "Doo-Wops & Hooligans", "Unorthodox Jukebox" once again sets the bar incredibly high for Mars and his phenomenal talent at making great music. From the refreshing retro chorus of "Young Girls" to the infectiously funky, innuendo-laden single "Locked Out of Heaven", each song on this album has a distinct personality all its own. Yeah, I know that sounds pretty corny, but it's true. Mars has teamed up with some of the best music producers out there (Benny Blanco, Paul Epworth, Diplo and Mark Ronson, just to name a few) to create one of the most diverse records of the year. From reggae ("Show Me") to blues ("If I Knew"), Bruno lets his emotions loose on a wide variety of classic and modern sounds that mesh surprisingly well with one another. Sure, a lot of the songs focus on Mars' fixation over bad girls, but once he finally slows down the tempo and shows his serious side, that's when "Jukebox" hits its high marks. By far, the darkest song on here is "Natalie", a cautionary tale about the protagonist's plans for revenge on a conniving femme fatale who's taken all his money. But it's the heartbreaking piano ballad "When I Was Your Man" that really steals the show. You can actually feel the pain and raw emotion pouring from Bruno's heartfelt lyrics, making it a modern classic in my book. Despite only boasting a mere ten tracks, "Unorthodox Jukebox" easily stands as one of the year's best albums. Full of raunchy pop tunes, sensitive love songs, and emotional ballads, this confident new collection of tracks may not appeal to everyone, but it's a definite must-buy for any fan of ambitious pop music with random touches of rock, reggae, and soul thrown in for good measure. If this is Bruno Mars at his most creatively daring, I can't wait to see where his career takes him from here.
