iTunes Editors’ Notes

Narrowing down a career this vast and expansive is asking for trouble — or at least for some painful omissions. 26 years are condensed into 16 tracks with additional previously unreleased tracks produced by Rick Rubin — “The Saints Are Coming,” a cover of the 1970s Scottish punk band the Skids performed with Green Day, and a very arena rock U2-sounding “Window in the Skies” — several special edits (“Vertigo,” “Where the Streets Have No Name,” “Sweetest Thing”), and a bonus live disc from Milan in 2005 summing up the group to date. The live recordings prove the band haven’t lost any of their technological firepower, sounding as nuanced and committed as when they initially sprang from the gate at the onset of the 1980s. However, the emphasis here is on later U2, as All That You Can’t Leave Behind and How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb are represented while October. Zooropa and Pop are not. But there’s no denying the anthemic, overwhelming majesty of “Pride (In the Name of Love),” “With or Without You,” and “New Year’s Day,” the brashy punk attitude of “Vertigo,” or the masterful tension of “One,” “Walk On” or “Mysterious Ways,’ which define an era as well as any.

Customer Reviews

^%*&#^$#^*

It really irritates me that I have to buy the whole album in order to get three new songs. Any true U2 fan should already have all these songs. Really don't care if I sound cheap but give me a break. Quit playing games and release the three new songs so I can buy them.

We've Been Wronged

Where's the justice in being a U2 fan for 27 years and you can't buy new songs unless you buy all the songs I've already bought over again? Where's the justice in all the money paid to see them in concert, convert LP to cassette to CD, etc .... and I can't buy two songs they just released. Do they really need to make the sale that bad? Their business savvy have kept them on top for this long ... come on, throw us a bone! I had the same complaint with unreleased stuff on The Complete U2 and now another best of/greatest hits compilation ... I'm disappointed, disillusioned and dis'd by U2!!!!

Apple's Continued Hegemony

As a fan of U2, I already own most of these singles. I've seen them play live, so I don't need the live versions from Milan - I want the new songs and that's it. Why should I pay another $20 for those three songs? Come on Apple, give me the opportunity to spend money at your store instead of going somewhere else.

Biography

Formed: 1976 in Dublin, Ireland

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Through a combination of zealous righteousness and post-punk experimentalism, U2 became one of the most popular rock & roll bands of the '80s. They were rock & roll crusaders during an era of synthesized pop and heavy metal, equally known for their sweeping sound as for their grandiose statements about politics and religion. The Edge provided the group with a signature sound by creating sweeping sonic landscapes with his heavily processed, echoed guitars. Though the Edge's style wasn't conventional,...
