iTunes Editors’ Notes

In 1991, U2 received much critical kudos for Achtung Baby. The four-piece band had reinvented themselves as an entirely new group, abandoning their chiming moonwalk atmospherics for the explosive, impending electronica age. However, the '90s didn't turn out quite as they planned and by 2000 the band were back with their old producers trying to re-find their inner U2. Can you go home again? Well, it seems you can bury the point all together by simply writing and recording songs that make it feel as if you never took the detour in the first place. Atomic Bomb, much like the previous All That You Left Behind, features trademark U2 moves delivered with their sonically commanding depth and unashamed emotional range. "Vertigo" opens the album with a stark, yet full-bodied, blast. "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own," "Crumbs From Your Table," and "Yahweh" yearn with spiritual concerns that no amount of material success seems to satisfy.

Their best work. And this is after 25 years.

As a long-time and rather obsessive U2 fan, I'm not one to pine for the days of The Joshua Tree. U2 has always defined its music in their own unique style but always changing to satisfy their own desires as musicians to grow and improve. How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb is the culmination of their growing talent, emotional conviction, and unique understanding of what it means to produce raw rock music. This is their best album. If I had only one to bring on a deserted island, it would be this one, hands down. The raw power is just mind boggling. Every track is its own hit, whereas some albums like The Joshua Tree are more complete-album experiences, this one can be taken in song-by-song. If you are not a U2 fan at all, at least give this one a try. If you're a casual U2 fan, you must own this record. Highlights for me are "Miracle Drug" and "Crumbs From Your Table". Simple U2 at their core, but with a little extra fire that Bono's vocals and The Edge's guitar can bring to Larry and Adam's solid rhythm. I have listened to this album well over 150 times through. It doesn't get old. Every listen reveals more. This is certainly not the album of a group that has been cranking out tunes for 25 years. This is the album of a young, energetic band. A band on fire. A band ready to take on the world. And that's why this is U2's best. This is powerful music. Not only is it fresh and raw, but it has built in 25 years of experience as a close-knit band that few groups can bring.

STELLAR & POIGNANT SONGCRAFT.

Love them or loathe them, U2 has an unflinching level of consistency and tenacity. In HTDAAB they have created a how to guide; a way for us to deal with these strange times. 'Vertigo' the first slam-dunk single is vibrant and bombastic. It screams for airplay and it deserves it. The guitar riff is infectious. The bass and drums push and pull you into inertia. Bono's phrasing 'A feeling's so much stronger than a thought' provides shards of intellect in an unruly landscape. The sentences collide into each other. Vertigo is an anthem for these times. If you think you've played it out, listen with fresh ears. U2's ability to universally connect is unmatched. Their brilliance lies in their ability to connect on so many levels. Classic U2 songs often transplant the listener into a defining moment. The song could be an argument with a lover, perhaps even God, or one's love for a parent..all within the same song. The genius here is that the listener attaches meaning and in a sense takes ownership of the song. With HTDAAB, U2 once again prove why they're the best at what they do...It is because they are 'The Original of the Species'. Standout tracks: Vertigo, Miracle Drug, Sometimes..., COBL, OOTS, and Fast Cars (special edition)

Biography

Formed: 1976 in Dublin, Ireland

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Through a combination of zealous righteousness and post-punk experimentalism, U2 became one of the most popular rock & roll bands of the '80s. They were rock & roll crusaders during an era of synthesized pop and heavy metal, equally known for their sweeping sound as for their grandiose statements about politics and religion. The Edge provided the group with a signature sound by creating sweeping sonic landscapes with his heavily processed, echoed guitars. Though the Edge's style wasn't conventional,...
