iTunes Editors’ Notes

Pere Ubu's second album, 1979's Dub Housing, is widely heralded as a postpunk classic—but here, "postpunk" has more to do with the era in which it arrived than the sounds it contained. If anything, its reconstructive approach has more in common with the cubist avant-rock of Captain Beefheart than anything punk-related. Though the Cleveland mavericks came from punky roots, their early albums are a gleefully shattered funhouse mirror of styles. Over the course of Dub Housing, you can identify sonic shards of twisted sea shanties ("Caligari's Mirror"), experimental electronic music ("Thriller!"), proto-industrial mayhem ("Blow, Daddy-o"), and jazz-inflected dub reggae (the title track). But all those elements are filtered through the fractured Pere Ubu perspective to produce something entirely "other"—especially with David Thomas' high-pitched yelp alternating between giddiness and mania for a sound previously unheard anywhere within the broadest definition of "rock."

Customer Reviews

Amazing

Great album, precursor to pixies. Unique use of synthesizer that gives the album the feeling of a spooky movie. Makes you want to dance.... And yelp

Great Artist

Great album from Cleveland legends; however, iTunes has let us down yet again. Where is Pere Ubu's debut album, The Modern Dance? It's just as incredible as this one!!

DUB STEP

The best Pere Ubu album ever.
