Editors’ Notes

From "SOS" to "Rude Boy" to "Umbrella" to "S&M," Rihanna was running the table at this point in her career, despite increasing competition from Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga. Her fourth album in four years (!) and sixth overall, Talk That Talk continued her hot streak. Emerging EDM phenom Calvin Harris produced two monster singles here: the vivacious "Where Have You Been" and the stratospheric "We Found Love," the latter becoming Ri-Ri's 11th No. 1 single. "Umbrella" costar Jay-Z returns on the title track, while "Drunk on Love" samples British indie darlings The xx and "Birthday Cake" packs a raunchy wallop in just over a minute.
