Most of It Sounds Like A Collection Of B-Sides

The positive aspects of this Album: 1. The instrumentation of this album for the most part is unique, earthy, innovative and well done. 2. The Production and sound quality is very good as well.
The Negative aspects: 1. Only two songs on this album begin to have a great melody and a evocative emotional power that is typically omnipresent in classic Nick Cave albums. Only "We know Who U R" and "Push The Sky Away" can hold a candle to Caves previous work on "Let Love In", "No More Shall We Part", "Henry's Dream" or "Your Funeral My Trial". The rest of the songs sound like lack luster B-sides but with great instrumentation and production.
2. Nick Caves voice is often becoming annoyingly monotone as he tries to weave his cumbersome lyrics into otherwise simple song structures. The juxtoposition feels jarring too often.
3. Nick Cave is one of the Best Pop lyricists of all time in my opinion and there are a few great lines on this album but there are way more embarrassing lyrics that try too hard to sound like a high brow literate rocker than evoking the powerful emotional cinema that he is often able to do.

Wowzers!

You can hear the whole thing on the NPR website. Could very well become my favorite Nick Cave…check it out.

Best of 2013 Contender

Longtime fan since The Birthday Party. This is really great stuff. I like the sparseness of it, the loops, the moods, the subtlety. Still making compelling music after 25+ years.
